We were lucky to catch up with Denise Thompson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Denise, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
I made my first dollar in my home, why is that? it’s because I started my business in the office of my home. I renovated the office I made it look just like a spa I mean everything was in perfect order and it was a friend of a friend and The service I provided for this client was a facial she loved it her skin was glowing and when she handed me that $30, that’s what I was charging at the time for an hour facial I was elated I couldn’t believe a long standing dream of mine to be in the beauty industry was actually happening..
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Denise Thompson I am a licensed aesthetician I have three kids I am married to one of the most wonderful man in the world I think. I got into the beauty industry years ago when I went to cosmetology school in the state of New York I had to leave early because I got pregnant with my first child and I was devastated I wanted to be a beautician so bad. And throughout the rest of my life it has been on my brain about being in the beauty industry, if I couldn’t be a beautician or hairstylist I needed to be around Beauty’, so after my kids got a little older because I was a stay at home mom I decided to go back to school to get my aesthetician license . I’m very proud of it I’m very happy because it allows me to be in the industry that helps women feel good about their selves. I am the proud owner of DREAM ENVYY BEAUTY At first I named my business DREAM ENVYY LASHES, because that was the first service I provided when I went back to aesthetician school but I have since broaden that spectrum in the form of beauty. Helping women feel good about themselves is my passion so the service that I provide in my beauty spa are facials, body contouring, teeth whitening, full body waxing, for women and men, and just to get a little bit more detailed about some of the services facials I do customized facial according to the clients skin type , so it could be a facial peel, micro dermabrasion facial aqua facial. I also provide the new trend in body services call body contouring and the various services within the service such as noninvasive BBL, noninvasive laser Lipo, cavitation, and lymphatic massage for postop plastic surgery clients, I absolutely love what I do, I love when I’m done with any service I provide to my clients and they look in the mirror I see their faces light up , in my spa it’s not only the service that I provide I actually provide an experience and the experience you get is being around my spirit being In tuned with women’s beauty. loving what I do , loving my work , appreciating these beautiful women from all shapes and sizes I’m also their therapists because once they lay on my table we’re conversing about anything and everything in their lives and in my life, so I truly get to know my clients on a personal level and on a professional level , That’s what sets me apart from everyone else I truly believe that the love I have for my craft and the love I have for my clients and you can truly see it when you look at my before and after pictures of my clients you can tell the care I took for them to look the way they look.. what I most want you to know about DREAM ENVYY BEAUTY is that we are a staple in the beauty industry community, when it is said and done I want everyone to know the name , I want everyone to know the pink and white logo, I want everyone to know the work that I do, I want everyone to feel the love that I resonate on to my clients and onto anyone else that come in contact with me , I want them to know and feel the passion from my heart that I put in to my craft .
Have you ever had to pivot?
Like I stated in the beginning I started my business in my home office I eventually decided to get a storefront, when I got my storefront and I transformed it from a gun store into full fledge four Room beauty spa I was so excited I spent so much money on transforming this place into my dream , and shortly in my second year of being in business. The landlord decided to go up on my rent and we all know being in business for two years it’s not quite a long time to start generating any profit. I had to put on my big girl panties and decide whether I was going to stay there or leave the beauty industry all together because I am devastated that I even have to make this decision. Nevertheless I made the decision after conferring with husbands, friends, colleagues about whether to stay in the business or not because at this point I was very frustrated that I wasn’t able to keep my storefront and I had thought I failed this was a big thing for me I thought I had failed That feeling was like no other, I had to get out of that space that headspace to MoveOn if I wanted to service any of my clients that were missing me. So after long consideration I decided to go and search for another place for me to do business that obviously was not going to be a storefront. I had to downgrade . I got a one suite 2 room in an office building and that’s where I am now , I started to rebuild my business with my old and new clients, the lesson I’ve learned is that nothing is permanent especially when you’re starting out a business you either go into a turnkey business or do the bare minimum to start operating as a business , because I have put so much money into renovating my store front , that I’ve lost so much money. so ladies and gentlemen if you are deciding to go into a business make sure it’s the right decision that you’re making , make sure you have a good decision makers around you. But DREAM ENVYY BEAUTY lives on we’re doing great with profits, on a much better scale we have new clients , and 2023 it’s going to be one of our best year.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source I had for receiving clients was Groupon Groupon is my best friend when it comes to getting new clients I know their percentages are very high and it will seem as if you’re not making any money through Groupon but you can look at it as when you get your Groupon client that is your time to shine that is your time to upsell that is your time to give that client you’re Undividable attention let them see that you are a professional let them know that you know the business that you’re in you’re very knowledgeable about your business and just be loving and caring to them let them know that they matter and that’s how I gained majority of my clients ,after that I didn’t have to use Groupon anymore because I’m now being referred by word-of-mouth also let your clients write reviews about your service and about you if they didn’t appreciate the service they should appreciate you and how you went about administering the service and that makes for great business in my opinion .
