We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Denise Santos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Denise, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project has been as the Founder and Producer of Latinas in Media Atlanta. A highlight for me has been producing and organizing the Comunidad Mixers, which create a space for Latinx talent to connect, collaborate, and share their stories. It’s inspiring to see the creativity and resilience in our community, and how the connections made uplift everyone involved.
This has reinforced the importance of representation and the need for spaces where diverse voices can thrive. Motivating me to push for more initiatives that empower and elevate Latinx talent in the Georgia Film and Television industry and beyond.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a Miami native, I’ve proudly called Atlanta home for the past 15 years. Coming from a community where Latin traditions were deeply woven into everyday life, I often found myself longing for that familiar sense of home while pursuing my passion as an actress. That desire to stay connected to my roots while making an impact in the industry is what inspired the beginning of Latinas in Media Atlanta.
What began as a simple Facebook group quickly evolved into something much bigger. It led to the creation of Latinas Who Lunch, co-producing live showcases, and organizing groups like Latinx Filmmakers Atlanta and La Fogata Readings. Latinas in Media Atlanta has evolved into a platform that continues to amplify Latinx voices in the Georgia Film and Television industry.
Speaking of community, coming up, Latinas in Media Atlanta has partnered with Explore The Spark to host our annual Comunidad Mixer on October 26th! We’d love to see you there! Tickets are available via ComunidadMixer.Eventbrite.com
We also invite you connect with us and reach out via our socials @LatinasInMediaATL or my personal @ItsDeniseSantos
How did you build your audience on social media?
If you’re hesitant about starting a social media group, don’t be. Social media was key in launching Latinas in Media Atlanta—it’s how the group got its start. By creating a space online, I was able to connect with other Latinas and Latinx creatives in our Film & TV industry who shared similar passions and goals. What began as an idea on a Facebook group quickly grew into something much larger, allowing the opportunity to build a real community both online and in person.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
At Latinas in Media Atlanta, the goal is to amplify Latinx voices in the Georgia Film and TV industry and beyond by creating spaces and providing resources and opportunities to help our community thrive, ensuring our stories are heard and our talent is represented in the industry.
