Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Denise Mobley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Denise, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I had the idea to become a Curl Specialist after 30 years of being proficient in hairdressing. I went to a introductory class for Devacurl in 2017. The class blew my mind! We had models with varying degrees of curls. What I learned in that class changed my mindset!
1st of all, We all have a story. A curly story. Having curly hair can come with traumatic experiences. I have listened to so many stuggles. Giving a great experience is very important !
Im here to help educate and to listen to what each client is looking for, and do my best to deliver amazing results! Beauty school teaches you how to “fix” curly , textured hair by straightening, relaxing, or hot tools to keep the texture at bay.
I became a hairdresser in the 80’s and hairspray and a hard cast was how we would style curly hair. Not anymore! Now the results are soft, bouncy, and shiny!
With this knowledge I decided to change course and become as educated as I could to learn more about this soft, bouncy ,voluminous, new outcome of naturally textured hair.
A curl specialist! With my background in color I decided to help my curly girls live their best hair life!
It took me a few years to learn and build the trust of these clients who are also learning how to take care of their curls.
I have been an educator for devacurl. I am certified in Rezo curl cutting and my business is now 90% curly girls! After all these years doing hair, I can say I truly love my career ♥️

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always dabbled in a little bit of hair. My mother, who was not a hairdresser, would give home perms to my friends and I. It was the 80:s so some frizz worked out well !
When I was 21 I decided to go to beauty school. It took me 4 yrs to get through school and receive my license. I would need to quit to have a baby, or life would get in the way.. but I always went back.
Here we are, 37 years later!
I am now a Master Stylist. I am the owner of Dmobleyhair A beauty studio. Llc. Training, and education have always been important to me. I have learned from amazing companies and individual stylist that blew my mind! I believe this is what sets me apart from the other stylist near me. My experience is vast!. I’m so proud and so humbled that my clients trust me with their hair! When I can bring out more of their natural beauty…Im honored.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Resilience comes from having to work thru devastating circumstances. I know this because 12 yrs ago my husband of 25 years lost his battle to cancer. It took 3 months from diagnosis till he passed. During those months he would go to work whether sick or loopy from the medication . I too went to work on autopilot. Of course my work suffered. Some amazing clients stayed thru it all. I lost many clients during that time. I was renting a chair, in a salon and eventually didn’t have enough clientele to keep my business afloat, or pay the rent. My children and I were evicted, I had to start fresh. Worked at a corporate salon for 6 years and when that business failed, I opened my own suite! I bought a house! I am sole proprietor of my small business, and I’m thriving! You can change your life. Only you can do it! I say Go For It !

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have been a hairdresser for 37 years. My body feels every haircut, every blowdry, every color application. Lol I took pride in delivering a beautiful straight Blowout on every texture of hair for years! It is Hard work! You are using the muscles of your hands, wrist, arms, and shoulders. Not to mention standing for 12 hour days.
To keep being able to stay in this industry I had to change my specialty. I went from 98% straight clientele. This included curly girls who wanted to keep their hair straight.
I made a pivot to 80% Curly hair clientele! People who want to wear their hair natural! Wash and go styles and hair color are what I specialize in now. My clients usually sit under a hooded dryer or they lay back and I’ll diffuse their hair. No more pulling it straight and tearing up my body. That’s for the young ones!
