We recently connected with Denise Liebetrau and have shared our conversation below.
Denise, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started sooner or later?
If I could go back in time, I wish that I would have started my HR & Compensation Consulting business sooner. I started my business in 2017 after leaving a large company and having more than 20 years of corporate experience. I was looking for a way to add variety to my work life and to find more balance. I needed a work schedule that was flexible so I could take my kids to school and pick them up each day. And starting and growing my business has exceeded my expectations. It has given me the opportunity to grow personally and professionally. And it has allowed me to use my expertise to help a variety of employers. My team and I work with for-profit and nonprofit firms. And we work across all industries as well as small to large companies. We make sure that our clients are paying their employees competitively and are prioritizing pay equity and fairness. We partner with senior leaders to ensure their total compensation philosophy is aligned to their long-term goals and budget. When an employer can’t attract and retain the talent they need, they won’t be successful in achieving their goals and their customers will not have a great experience.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started doing compensation consulting work more than 20 years ago and have worked in a variety of industries like telecommunications, financial services, mining, technology, nonprofit organizations, manufacturing, healthcare, and professional services. My team and I work with employer clients that want to pay their employees competitively and equitably.
We provide the following services: Market Aligned Pay Grades & Ranges; Market Pricing & Job Evaluation; Job Architecture & Career Paths; Bonus, Sales, & Long-Term Incentive Plan Design and Implementation; Pay Equity Audits & Pay Transparency Solutions; Compensation Survey Participation & Custom Survey Design; Global & Executive Compensation Benchmarking; HR Communications & Training – Pay & Performance Discussion Expertise; Pay-Related Compliance Advice; Compensation Process Improvements & Project Management; and People Integration: Capturing M&A Value.
Bottom-line: We help employers get their pay programs right so their employees can focus on taking care of customers.
Prosper Consulting is known for being passionate about paying people what they are worth and for partnering with leaders to make it easier to attract and retain their employees.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation as “the compensation problem solver” was developed over many years by being consistent. I show up with curiosity and want to understand the problems my employer clients have. Through listening and developing solutions I learned how to ensure that what was implemented considered the needs of employees and the needs of their employers. I work to ensure that pay is decided using a standard process and communicated in advance of any change or payout. I also share my knowledge and post on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/deniseliebetrau/) consistently. If you follow me there, you will learn more about how to ask for more money if you are an employee and negotiate a pay raise or job offer. I also post for HR and business leaders, so they know how to deliver compensation and other rewards to employees in a way that is going to help them be successful.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Growing your clientele takes time. First, define your ideal client. Then find where they are in-person and online. And show up in those locations with your expertise. Develop compelling topics you can speak on and become a speaker. Use your expertise to write blog posts and then post those on social media and use them as scripts for videos. And be consistent in your marketing efforts. Meet your commitments to clients so they send more clients to you. And don’t forget to build relationships with referral partners. These are people who provide a service or product to your ideal clients but are not providing the same thing you are.
