We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Denise Lawrence. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Denise below.
Alright, Denise thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
Stay focused and not get distracted by trendy products that do not necessarily fit with my goals. I wasted a lot of money creating products that weren’t profitable and ended up being a poor use of time and energy.
Develop my elevator pitch – this is an area I still struggle with. I know what I do and why my products are beneficial but I don’t have a concise way to articulate this.
Recognize my limitations and hire people who are good at what they do to help me with areas I struggle with such as logo design, photography, and marketing.
Take my time when making big decisions. I was so excited to share my creations and hired a company to create an ad. I ended up spending a lot of money on a product I was not satisfied with and never used. I also participated in a trade show I was not prepared for and that was another costly lesson.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have a passion for all things natural, and started making soaps using organic, plant-based ingredients as an alternative to the commercial brands that affected my son’s sensitive skin. I fine tuned my recipes, increased my variety and started giving them as gifts to friends and family. Eventually I branched out to candle making and subsequently started Soothing Remedies with a commitment to using quality, organic ingredients to create premium products I love and feel confident using daily. We use naturally derived and organic ingredients to manufacture our soaps and candles. Our products are free of parabens, phthalates and sodium lauryl sulfate and are made in small batches for premium quality. As part of our commitment to our community, for each item sold, we donate a bar of soap to someone in need through our nonprofit partners.

We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
I manufacture all my products and learned the basics from reading books. I knew I wanted to find an alternative to commercial soaps and came across The Handmade Soap Book in a bookstore and started playing around with various recipes until I had the confidence to create my own recipe using my preferred plant based oils.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me is personal recommendations via word of mouth or product reviews.
