We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Denise Garza a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Denise, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
Photography has always been something I’ve loved. As a kid, I was always taking pictures and capturing little moments. In college, I took photography classes to learn more and refine my skills, but for a long time it stayed a hobby.
Everything changed when I was on maternity leave with my son. During that time, I really started to reflect on what I wanted, and I realized I didn’t want to return to my corporate job. It was a difficult decision because it felt like the “safe” choice, but I knew I wanted something more meaningful and flexible for my life and family.
I had already been thinking about photography as more than a hobby, so I decided to take a leap and turn it into a business. It wasn’t easy, and there was a lot to figure out along the way, but I believed in what I could offer and the value of capturing real, meaningful moments for people.
Seven years later, I’m incredibly proud of the business I’ve built. It’s allowed me to do what I love while connecting with families and preserving moments that truly matter.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Hi, I’m Denise, the photographer behind Denise Elaine Photography based in San Antonio, Texas. Photography has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. What started as a childhood love for capturing everyday moments grew into a deeper passion in college, where I took photography classes to really learn the craft. For years it stayed a hobby, but everything changed when I became a mom.
During my maternity leave, I had a moment of clarity. I realized I didn’t want to return to my corporate job—I wanted to build something meaningful, creative, and flexible for my life and my family. That’s when I decided to take a leap and turn my passion into a business. It wasn’t easy, but it was absolutely worth it.
Today, I specialize in family, maternity, newborn, and milestone photography. My goal is to create a relaxed and comfortable experience where families can simply be themselves. I offer a variety of sessions—from full sessions to seasonal mini sessions—designed to meet families where they are, both in style and budget.
What I really provide goes beyond photos. I help families hold onto moments that pass by so quickly—the little in-between smiles, the connection, the feeling of a season of life. I know firsthand how important those memories are, especially as a mom. My clients often come to me wanting natural, genuine images, and I guide them every step of the way so they never feel awkward or unsure in front of the camera.
What sets me apart is the experience I create. I focus on making sessions feel easy, comfortable, and even fun. I also prioritize connection—with my clients and within the images themselves. My style is warm, natural, and timeless, with an emphasis on real emotion over perfectly posed moments.
What I’m most proud of is building a business that not only supports my family, but also allows me to connect with other families in such a meaningful way. Many of my clients return year after year, and it’s truly an honor to document their lives as they grow.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about my brand, it’s that I genuinely care. I care about your experience, your comfort, and your memories. When you book with me, you’re not just getting photos—you’re getting someone who is fully invested in capturing your story in a way that feels real and lasting.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part for me is delivering the final gallery to my clients. There’s something really special about that moment—when they see their images for the first time and respond with so much joy and emotion. Hearing how much they love their photos and knowing I was able to create something meaningful for them is incredibly fulfilling.
It’s more than just taking pictures—it’s giving people something they can hold onto for years. Knowing that I’ve captured moments they’ll look back on and cherish makes all the hard work worth it.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
My biggest source of new clients has always been word of mouth and client referrals—whether that’s someone sharing their experience in person or posting their photos on social media. There’s something really meaningful about people trusting me enough to recommend my work to their friends and family.
I think people sometimes underestimate how powerful that is for small businesses. A personal recommendation carries so much weight, and it’s been a huge part of how I’ve grown over the years. It also motivates me to make sure every client has a great experience, because those genuine connections are what continue to bring new families my way.
