We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Denise Alexandra a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Denise, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
My divorce in 2019 was the defining moment when I decided to become a certified life coach. I was working on my PhD in Art History, but needed to decide what I was going to do in terms of income. I had never been on my own before and I was terrified. I knew working a 9-5 job wasn’t an option for me. I have family and friends in Europe that I’m very close to and spending a good amount of time there was a non-negotiable for me. I had to find something that I was good at, enjoyed and that gave me the flexibility to work from anywhere. I wanted to be able to attend my daughter’s school functions and travel with her, while also being there for her emotionally after the divorce. So I asked myself what my strengths were and realized that listening to others, sharing with compassion and encouraging those who felt down were things I had already been doing all along. A friend had told me about life coaching a few years prior and I quickly began to research various life coaching certification programs.
I received my certification through Inner Glow Circle and am now in a completely different environment from my previous years in academia. I honestly never thought that I would be coaching one day ( nor be divorced for that matter), but it’s interesting to me how a change in life circumstances can lead to the discovery of a new passion and career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
While I am a professionally trained and certified life coach through the ICF (International Coaching Federation) and am able to support my clients in all areas of their life, I find that my greatest strength lies in supporting women through their divorce journey. The beauty of this combination is that I am equipped to partner with my clients as they navigate all areas of life which divorce or separation impacts. We can work through the issues that come up while dealing with divorce by setting goals and focusing on growth in a variety of areas from self-care, to confidence, empowerment and co-parenting.
Something I am immensely proud of is how I was able to make it through my divorce with grace and dignity. I am a huge advocate for peaceful, successful co-parenting (whenever circumstances allow) and love to see my clients make their own powerful decisions in regards to their family’s future. Divorce is not the end of the story, it’s the beginning of a new chapter.
In order to serve my clients I offer 3 and 6 month coaching packages for 1:1 coaching via Zoom or phone and am launching a group coaching program in September. I believe life coaching should be accessible to everyone which is why I am also creating a self-paced digital course and workbook in order to provide services at various price points.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Honestly, many marketing strategies just don’t feel good to me. I put my messages and offers out into the world and believe the right people will read them and benefit from them at the right time. I create content that speaks of my own experience, gives information, shares what topics currently come up for my clients and empowers those seeking support and motivation. Life coaching, especially in the area of divorce, is very personal and the relationship between coach and client has to be a good fit for both parties. Therefore it is important for me to show up authentically and compassionately. I enjoy reading and responding to direct messages and emails from women all over the world seeking advice and encouragement. If this leads to a working relationship then I know the client has genuinely chosen me as coach for the value and experience I can provide for them.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I believe being able to connect with other people on an emotional level is necessary to be a successful life coach. When coaching a client towards a goal, blocks will get in the way. This is where the deeper work starts and vulnerability is required to move past whatever is holding the client back. The client will only become open and vulnerable when trust and an emotional connection is present.
