We were lucky to catch up with De’Netra “Netra” Norris recently and have shared our conversation below.
De’Netra “Netra”, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I am a Kansas City, MO native and I recently took a leap of faith and relocated to Orlando, FL to expand my brand, networking and personal growth. I am forever grateful for my hometown yet I began to feel like there was something missing or even a sense of feeling stagnant. So I began to talk to my mom about my decision and wanting to be in a different environment to learn new things. When my mom caught the plane to come get me that same day I told her I wanted to get in my car and drive to Florida that same day, so we did. I remember my father texting me and saying, “if you love me take care of yourself” and that meant spiritually, emotionally, physically and financially. I then took the leap of faith and hit the ground running in Florida networking and using social media to share my voice and support others . My father would always tell me “run your own race” which meant whatever I wanted in life it was my job to start and make sure I finished. Upon moving to Florida, a few months later following Hurricane Ian my father passed. As my father’s only child I knew it was my responsibility to ensure his legacy lives on. Had I never made my mind up to move to Florida I would never know the joy in waking up to sunshine being motivated to be a better mother, nurse and all around person with confidence knowing that I can do whatever I put my mind to. The most rewarding thing about the risk I took is that my children were able to see me as their first role model and know that anything is possible and obtainable.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I chose to become a nurse after I realized I had a passion for those dealing with mental illness and psychological issues. Since beginning my career in nursing I’ve expanded to various specialties and began to focus more on work life balance and self care. “I help other nurses become transparent in their identity in and out of scrubs”. Being a nurse is only part of who you are and if you don’t feed those other areas of yourself you will lose them and began to hide behind your title. I began creating content and digital products to support nurses not being afraid to disconnect from being a nurse so that they are constantly feeding the areas of their life that supports the reason they first went into nursing and caring for others. What sets me apart from others is the constant authenticity of being unapologetic about who I am in its entirety. I am most proud of being able to reach others while never having to dim who I really am. I want potential future followers, fans and friends to always recognize my brand as unmasked, transparent and bold as you should never have to alter who you are to go far.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Other than training knowledge in the field of nursing I want others to know that balance, relationships and growth should always be a priority because you can’t pour into others and not have the same things pouring back into you for strength and motivation.
Any advice for managing a team?
When managing a team and maintaining high morale it is important to remember “communication” and “respect” as those are the two components that most situations lack that can cause a misunderstanding.
