We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Denerik Pickett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Denerik , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
In the fashion industry it can become very easy to loose sight or focus on what you wanted your true purpose or legacy to be. When I think about the legacy that i hope to leave with the world, I think of icons and Legends such as Josephine Baker, Naomi Campbell, Iman, Audrey Hepburn or Stephen Burrows , Anna Wintour , Virgil Abloh and my absolute favorite journalist, stylist, creative director and editor-at-large of Vogue magazine , Andre Leon Talley. I hope my Legacy is as strong and as vivid as those that are still here and as extensive and glorious of those that are gone. I don’t want to sell the most garments or be the most known, I want my legacy to be creating art, bringing the the most elaborate ideas to life. Making people look as beautiful as they feel on the inside using fashion, I hope to be a Visionary, a special seeing eye in the industry, styling the looks of today and creating the looks of tomorrow.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Denerik Pickett , fashion stylist and designer born and raised out of Houston, Tx. Although fashion is my main focus for my career I do have other interest and things I care about. While I continue to pursue my dreams in the industry, I have also become a student again studying behavioral science. I hope to have my Bachelor in social work in the coming years completing my journey to joining the Texas department of family and protective services. I joined the fashion industry when I noticed the lack of quality clothes for the plus size community , I knew it would be a challenge but everybody deserves to look and feel good at reasonable prices. For the last 4 years I’ve been creating custom garments for clients regardless the size and I hope to continue to be able to provide that service and grow at a larger scale to help more people. I also hope to be able to style for Artist, TV Personalities etc.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect would definitely be bringing the clients vision to life. When it comes to custom garments it can be difficult to illustrate sometimes, especially if the client has a clear or precise idea on what they want. Once the project is finished and the client gets to see what they thought was only a part of their imagination I get the biggest reward of knowing I was able to create it just how they wanted.
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
Not yet. Although my current focus for the brand is fashion and styling, I will be expanding January 2023. I plan to branch my business into a full personal and event service management team. Not only will we be able to assist with fashion styling , we hope to partner with other businesses for client event preparation needs like hair and makeup. And we will even begin to coordinate and plans events, including services like decorum, catering and entertainment. The goal is to make the process of going to or planning an event easier , being able to take care of everything with one company.
