We recently connected with Denequia Townsable and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Denequia, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I started singing in my home church choir back home I. Hollywood. Fla at the age of 4 years old . But truly it’s wasn’t until I started singing in talent shows at school and at the local recreational center in talent nights and for festivals that I knew music was it for me . People views me as this host girl with a powerful voice . I would sing songs no one else could like “Whitney Houston’s I will always love you & Mariah Carey’s I give my all . I always felt like singing songs from what I considered legends of my time was the key factor in me defining my sound when it comes to R&B music . One things for sure my musical talent is God-Given. I’m just grateful to have this talent. I’ve been singing all my life ans even when I took a break for a few years I still write poems and music because I knew one day I’d be right back where I started and that on stage doing what I love to do , and that sing .

Denequia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Denequia I am a singer songwriter and actress. Where I’m from dreams don’t come true everyday without pressure being applied. And all I’ve known to do all my life is apply pressure. Those close to me say “Denequia “ your a triple threat ! And it took me years to become comfortable with that discovery in myself because I never want folks to think I don’t deserve it . Music to me is my therapy it’s my life line it’s what allows me to be free because I live such a reserved life in real life . My genre of music is “undefined” I love to write R&B music , EDM, easy listening, gospel, country, pop music I enjoy writing and creating hip hop or dance records. My goal is to be on every music chart gaining massive numbers and fans as well as exposure from every genre. I don’t believe I’m boxes so I’ll never confirm to just one genre of music it’s not how I work creatively. I have to be free to experiment with sounds and keep folks on their feet . When I leave this earth folks will remember me as the artist that charted on pretty much in every genre of music . I don’t have many friends although I’m a social butterfly at times .I believe in preserving yourself , your energy and your time so when I’m not doing music I’m with my family just living a regular life . I’m just Denequia and I truly believe I’m deserving and that it’s my time to shine .
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish that early in my career I understood the power of “social media” better . I would have in my opinion been on. It took me a while to get use to being on social media , trying to decide what to post and not to post use to be my struggle when I started I wasn’t sure how to describe myself as an artist to the world . But once I found my sound everything else fell in line with the goals I’ve set forth for myself and now I’m self driven so getting online and going live is becoming the new normal for me . I use to think “why do they wanna see me just sit here and talk or create”? I had to realize these folks see in me what I couldn’t for a long time see in myself staying connected with them as they support my journey is what will keep me grounded . My supporters have watched me work through kinks in my music ans my style and brand over the years . Now that the Boss Lady Denequia persona has arrived. I am now making great music, still providing substance with the element of surprise every time .

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
There’s a saying “what God has for me it is for me “! And I believe it . When your Blessed with such any talent it will always be hard for folks who have no desire to do what you do to have an opinion. I don’t take it with a grain of salt I just don’t waste my time trying to explain my path or purpose to any human being . They’ll never understand why you go hard but they’ll watch you struggle from a far ans judge you until they began to see for themselves why you put yourself out there . I remember getting back into my music in 2016 and recording in the studio I had woman I hung around that did t understand why I was recording music , they did not believe in my capabilities . They knew I could sing but never thought I’d take it seriously the hang outs became less because my hunger for the music and to be creative was more important than just hanging out . Once they realized how serious I was and dedicated one of two of them in particular began to believe in me . And wanted to help anyway they can . My friend Tanya Daniel on my birthday one year gifted me 40.00 towards a studio session . That to me was the most precious gift other than my family that anyone could give to me . It made me wanna never give up on my dream to sing. I know Tanya giving me that money was here way of telling me “You can do this Dee”! We are still friends to this day her family is my family we are connected always .
