We were lucky to catch up with Denecia Miller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Denecia, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
As a kid growing up in Milwaukee I’ve always been a extremely creative and expressive soul . Thankfully my parents have always encouraged my creativity from supplying me with the tools necessary to create whatever my heart desired, to also putting me in different summer camps and after school programs centering many different forms of art. I’m very fortunate to have entire village from my parents, to my grandparents , especially my aunt (Nesha) , and a few other family members that did an amazing job in giving me the safe space to fully express myself without the fear of being judged. That outstanding support I receive to this day from them has given me the confidence to do whatever I wanted to do in life because I always knew I have a support system literally cheering me on from the crowd. If I didn’t have that type of support I honestly don’t know where I would be.

Denecia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello my name is Denecia Miller I’m a licensed cosmetologist who specializes in makeup artistry , Brow Laminations , and I also create wearable art. I started my career in cosmetology fresh out of high school and have been working in the beauty industry ever since. Along this journey I’ve had the pleasure of working with a wide variety of clients and even had some amazing opportunities to do partnerships with reputable companies. I put my all into my artistry regardless of the particular media I’m using at said moment. I can’t help but feel an amazing amount of pure gratitude for every beautiful canvas I get the opportunity to work with. The fact I get a chance to daily create art on someone’s face for a special night out or create art across the back of someone’s jean jacket for their birthday gives me joy. There’s a certain type of fulfillment you recieve from for being a artist that I thrive off of. Turning my client to the mirror so they can see the makeup look I provided for them and to see them light up looking at themselves makes my heart smile. The major takeaway I want everyone to know that patrons with me is I’m going to give you all that I’ve got at every occasion. As a client you could’ve gone anywhere else with another service provider but you’re here in my chair and for that I thank you and will always present you with my best work and energy.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn that being different is your super power . I moved from the Midwest to the South and to say the least that was a adjustment. At the time I didnt feel like I fit into what was deemed “normal” here. Overtime I had to come to the realization that I’m not meant to be what someone deemed as normal or acceptable. I’m artsy, I’m colorful, and over the top at every occasion I born to be different and that’s ok with me. Nobody has time to be stressed and depressed attempting to fit in a mold that wasn’t made for you.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I really think what’s driving this creative journey of mine is my determination to make my all of wildest dreams to come true based off of my God-given talents I’ve been blessed with. I believe if you’re given a talent that you should use it . That talent will eventually open doors for you and also create opportunities for yourself and those around you to prosper.
