SubscribeAlright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dena Patterson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dena, appreciate you joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
Establishing my practice of wellness, yoga, mindfulness, and non-profit Serenity Urban Wellness.
One of the first key challenges to starting my practice was taking accountability for my life. I had to look in the mirror and take ownership of the role I played in many paths I took. Sometimes it’s easier to blame others or overlook the role we played. Yes, sometimes things happen on this journey called life that’s out of our control, but it’s up to us to have those incidents make us or break us.
In my darkest time, practicing mindfulness gave me peace, I was following a program that was instilled in me to survive, but not bring me peace. I was raised to call on assistance from a higher power, but finally realized what I was calling on & seeking, resided in me. It was given to us all, breathe. The breath of LIFE.
As I began to take accountability and accept what I saw, I felt differently. I understood that this program has levels to it. I had to determine what journey was best for me and began to do the work. I wouldn’t change any of my dark days, trials, or tribulations because it is molding me into the person I am becoming today. It has allowed me to hold space for others so they can tap into the healer that resides within.
Any advice or suggestions that I would give to anyone doing wellness work is to work on self-first. I would suggest looking into your mirror and asking yourself do you like what you see? The more we walk into the light & work on ourselves others will see our light through our life, with no words spoken.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a proud mother, entrepreneur, business owner, and community activist. I’m a certified yoga instructor who loves to hold spaces that allow others to slow down, breathe, and tap into the healer that resides in each one of us. It brings me joy to share this practice with many beautiful souls. It’s my goal to practice mindfulness, sound therapy, and yoga in a safe space. To be mindful to also practice these principles in my everyday life. We practice breathing work, mindfulness, and endurance in our yoga sessions. We’re learning from our past, confronting our thoughts, releasing hurt, and fears, and embracing our future. Yoga is so much more than poses; it’s tapping into your inner you. Yoga poses are called asanas, but guess what? Heal means sana in Latin, “A healthy mind in a healthy body”.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing your wellness practice is to live what you practice. I would suggest always put yourself in the client’s position. The life we live is the best advertisement and billboard.

How’d you meet your business partner?
What the old saying is, “Be mindful of what you think or ask for”.
I have always wanted to garden and grow my food. I DID NOT understand that it requires WORK. LOL During the pandemic and a transition in my life, I meet a farmer born in Elaine, AR. The first crop I sowed, ALL DIED. I saw life peeping from the soil and didn’t realize to maintain growth, work has to be put in. I hope some of the readers catch that, smile. We desire to give the community a food hub, an opportunity to take time out for a mental & self-love break. To learn the importance of growing, producing, and sustainability. How it all comes together to contribute to a healthy you, incorporating yoga, mindfulness, life skills, self-defense, and community cottage-style activities. To let the community, know that your mental health, oral health, mobility, and body shouldn’t always be in survival mode, but also thriving in harmony.
