We were lucky to catch up with Dena Lyons recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dena thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Artists have creative souls, like birds have wings. I am definitely destined to create. The concept of a regular 9-5 job doesn’t really resonate with me. I tend to work all hours of the day, always developing new projects, thinking outside the box, so a regular job with would hinder me in many ways.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an artist, a painter, who creates brightly colored oil paintings of flowers and trees. I print these vivid works onto sumptuous Italian silk scarves and clothing. My brand is playful and luxurious.
My plans did not entail starting a scarf business. I was approached while painting outdoors by an onlooker who suggested that I print my paintings onto porcelain. Christmas was only a few months away which gave me the idea of printing onto scarves. And voila, my scarf brand was born.
My hope is that through my artwork and my designs, people are inspired daily with color, light and love.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being fulfilled each day with the work I do. Every day I work on creating visual inspiration. I feel happy knowing that my works make people feel happy.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I often get the sense that people believe artists work when inspired and sit around doing nothing when they are not inspired. This notion is misinformed. Artists work night and day, whether creating, brainstorming, or marketing. Artists are anything but lazy and are often up late into the night following their passion, despite their go with the flow happy go lucky demeanor.
