We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dena Halim a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dena, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
A big risk that I have taken in my life is definitely when I decided to open up my own business and having to build it from the ground up, especially with it being a new thing to me it was hard because I had to learn all the ins and the outs of the business world as well as perfecting my craft, to keep the business going And make it successful. I took the risk because I always wanted a certain type of lifestyle for myself, and I always wanted to be able to take care of the people I love, and I just feel like working for a corporate company as just an employee I was never gonna be able to get to the lifestyle that I wanted, although it has been very difficult and I’m still growing every day with my business. It is turning out very good and I am very proud of the direction that my company is heading in.
Dena, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For the readers who don’t know who I am my name is Dena Halim I am a 26 year old Lash, artist and Esthetician and I am the owner of pretty and paid Lashes Xo LLC located in centerline Michigan. I always been into the beauty industry. I just didn’t really know what exactly I wanted to do in the industry other than service people doing something that I loved. And once I got a feel of doing lash extensions, I grew to really love it, and it became more than just a way to make extra money. It really became a passion for me. Lash extensions is a luxury service women get to actually enhance their own beauty. This is a service that women of all ages are able to get done all Lash extension sets are 100% customizable depending on what each client wants lash extension can vary from natural sets to dramatic and more Fuller sets, depending on what the client wants. No set is ever the same each set will vary depending on clients. Eye shapes and amount of natural lashes that they have. Each appointment will have time set aside for a small lash consultation where I will create a customized set for each client so I can give them exactly the look that they want. I think it’s very important to educate my clients on my craft. I feel like what sets me apart from other Lash artist in this industry is this is something that only started off as a way to earn extra income, and it truly is something that I fell in love with doing and grew a huge passion for! every day I meet new people I meet women and I have the opportunity to enhance their beauty that they already have and to me it’s like a gift that I have, and I love that I am able to provide these services. I love to make people happy, and I love to just give that extra bit of confidence to my clients. I am most proud of the work I have put in and the dedication I have put into my business because I never thought it would be where it is today I have met some of the most amazing people being in this industry. and 90% of those people are all my clients. I want potential clients to reach out to me. This is not a business where I just want you to come in get a service pay me your hard earned money and go on about your day. This is a company where I want you to come in I want to discuss what it is that you are looking for, what is it that brought you into me today it’s more of a bond and a friendship that I build with my clients. These are women that I see every two weeks so I love to get to know them and I wanna create art on their eyes it’s more than just lash extensions… I’m a very friendly person and I am very active with all my clients and my followers on social media and in person my phone number is always available for anybody who want to reach out, have a conversation, or have any questions about the Lash industry.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
For me, the most effective strategy for building clientele is just staying consistent. It took me three years to build the clientele that I have and I worked very hard to get this steady clientele. You have to post every day social media is your best friend when you are building a brand I had to put myself out there and I had to use all social media platforms. I used to walk around the mall handing people flyers and just leaving my business card anywhere I went whether it was out to eat at the mall or at the movie theaters, I was leaving my business card somewhere where somebody could find it .
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helped me build my reputation within this market is just being myself. A lot of my clients were strangers to me, and after they just met me one time they were able to see what type of person I was they were comfortable with me. I was very welcoming and very friendly. I explained everything I was doing while they were getting a service done, and that is very important in the beauty industry especially for first time clients. There is always that awkward, shy icebreaker moment when you are meeting a new client, especially with them laying down for an hour or two with their eyes closed you have to make them feel comfortable. They have to be able to trust you, so being friendly, and just being a great conversational person will help a lot and It’s always going to be one or two things that they remember about you and you always want it to be something positive.
