Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dena Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dena, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I’ve always LOVED fashion! My mom was my very first example of style. I remember as a little girl trying on her clothing and shoes, even though I definitely could not fit it, lol. As an adult, I would always get compliments from friends and strangers on what I was wearing. I’ve always had a passion for fashion but never attempted to make anything of it past individuals often asking me for style advice. At some point, those around me kept saying that I could put my skills to use and make it work for me as a stylist. In a HUGE ball of nerves, I launched The Brown Effect on the eve of my 40th birthday in 2022. Once I released the website on my social media platforms, I felt 100x better right after!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
By trade, I am an Accounting/Finance professional who loves all things style and fashion. The Brown Effect is a fashion styling/consulting business which specializes in helping individuals with finding and developing their personal style. Services offered by my business are:
-Personal Shopping
-Closet Revamping
-Photo Shoot Styling
-Fashion Show Styling
-Fashion Image/Consulting
…and more!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The main thing I have to constantly tell myself is, when working with clients, the first idea may not always be what they are looking for. For example, personal shopping is one of my most popular services offered. A client may not necessarily be totally over the moon with the slate of looks I send their way due to sticking with a comfort zone of what they’re used to. It is my job to help them expand their fashion and style above what they’re accustomed to, but at the same time, making sure they are indeed comfortable and confident in selecting the options presented to them.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Social media and word of mouth has been the best marketing tools in obtaining new and recurring clients. While my social media presence is still budding and growing, I believe that having a great personality can go a very long way as it’s super important to be personable when working with others.
