We recently connected with Demi Wylde and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Demi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve always naturally been drawn to writing. I like to say the only classes I paid any attention to in school was art and English. Growing up I also always had my nose in some book, and it wasn’t until college when I really got involved in writing and editing the college paper as an editor. I took those skills, started creating news content, social media, ad copy, podcasts, books and blog posts.
I really wish I had simply followed my gut when I was younger. I think there was a part of me that felt like writing was a deeply personal thing that had no real world application, but learning how to apply those skills to achieving something practical really solidified the confidence I needed. Sometimes we already know what our strengths are, and we only need to trust in them. You’ve still gotta practice, though!
Demi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a sex writer and educator, I am interested in creating content that encompasses topics that surround sex, dating, or relationships. My blog, A Deviant’s Guide to Sex is a good example of that. I write it in the form of a sort of how-to for modern sex and dating. I also write a personal story series called The Deviant Diaries which chronicles my own stories from my sexual awakening, to breakups, and of course a few mishaps along the way. Other than that, I host a podcast, called Hookup Horror Stories with Demi Wylde, which allows me the opportunity to interview people from within the sex world, but also to delve some more difficult topics such as domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. I think it’s important to have a platform to not only entertain people, but also to educate them on the world around them.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, because of what kind of things I create, always tie into educating and entertaining people at the same time. Whether it is a podcast interview, a blog post, or a TikTok video, everything that you get from me, you walk away having learned something. I think our education system is pretty messed up, and I always had a hard time in school just because the way I learn is different from the one-size-fits-all method. And of course I’m passionate about the topics, so it just makes sense to me as a creator to facilitate the absorption of knowledge somehow.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Ever since I was young, I have always had a complicated relationship with sexuality. This sort of filtered into my adult life in a myriad of ways, but ultimately it catapulted me into learning more about the world of sex and dating. I came to the conclusion that we don’t get enough education from an early age about the importance of interpersonal communication when it comes to the field of sex and dating. Comprehensive sex education could have saved me so much time figuring out life and relationships and could have helped me avoid some pretty toxic situations in my life. I think what I hope to achieve is to help others navigate tough situations in life for which there is no guide book, and open conversations about tough topics like sexuality or relationships so that others are equipped to navigate them in healthier ways.
