We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Demetrius Witherspoon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Demetrius below.
Alright, Demetrius thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I’ve always been captivated by the art of storytelling in movies, having grown up immersed in a diverse array of genres. However, pursuing this passion seemed out of reach due to financial constraints and a lack of knowledge on where to begin. Fortunately, as technology advanced, cameras and editing programs became more accessible. About a decade ago, faced with unemployment and the responsibility of providing for my family, I took a leap of faith. With borrowed funds, I established my production company, DV Entertainment Pictures.
Partnering with my 14-year-old daughter, we delved into independent filmmaking, immersing ourselves in YouTube tutorials on filming, editing, and visual effects. Before long, I found myself crafting music videos, commercials for a cancer non-profit, and capturing weddings. With a background in music and art, this endeavor felt like a natural extension, seamlessly blending my passions. Each film production became a learning experience, fueling my passion for filmmaking even more.”

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always loved sci-fi/Fantasy movies and wanted to make one. So I came up with this story about a lady that was experimented on got thrown into a multiverse and had to find her way out and fight for her child. So I wrote the script and started to find people to act in it. I had family members, friends, and actors I found in Facebook groups be part of my film.
As an Independent filmmaker who is working on a no-budget or low-budget film. You learn how to work with what you have. I have filmed in locations like parks, streets, and abandoned warehouses, doctor’s offices starting out. It was truly gorilla shooting. Then I started to surround myself with a crew and that kind of made the load lighter. We filmed in Production Studios like The Box Studio in downtown Indianapolis. We built sets inside and made it home for my award-winning sci-fi film series Submerge Universe.
Independent filmmaking is hard work. You have to write, get funding, get location, get actors, film it, edit it, vfx, get distribution, market it, and that is not even half of it. You have to have thick skin and remember you may get many “No, but all you need is one ‘YES. But I love the process and the end results when your film shows in the theatre and the lights go low. And you are praying everyone likes your film.
Over a decade I have done self-distribution of my films and they have been in stores, distributed in Japan, Amazon Prime, Apple tv, tubi, and now I have my own streaming service Submerge Universe TV online. I have also been able to sell my film and merch at Film Festivals and Comic Conventions.
Over the years, participating in conventions both locally and across surrounding states has been instrumental in cultivating a dedicated fan base for the film series. It’s incredibly fulfilling to engage with attendees, particularly young individuals, and inspire them to pursue their dreams. Through workshops and panels, I have the opportunity to share insights and guidance, fostering a sense of empowerment and possibility among aspiring filmmakers.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When I start on a script or any project I start to post about it on social media. Because people love to go on the journey with you. And they love to see the progress. And it makes them feel part of it.
Remember to be consistent with posting content and marketing your brand. Don’t worry about getting likes, just keep making content. Because people are always watching and you will get followers as well.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is driven by a clear goal and mission: to tell the most compelling stories possible and inspire individuals to pursue their dreams. I believe in the transformative power of storytelling, and I strive to create narratives that resonate deeply with audiences, sparking imagination, empathy, and motivation. Ultimately, my aim is to leave a lasting impact on those who experience my work, encouraging them to embrace their passions and pursue their aspirations with courage and determination.
