We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Demetrius Watts. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Demetrius below.
Demetrius, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made (either in terms of time or money)? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The worst investment I ever made.
I took a risk by listening to my bro. This is what happened okay it was a Saturday, summertime in Orlando FL, and I had to pay rent for the next month and I was super short with my half of the rent. I had $200 out of $600 of it. And my bro. (who’s my roommate) he was short too but he had an idea that could help us out.
So in the meantime him thinking of the plan I drove us up to a Wawa gas station to get snacks. I was thinking about how we’re going to pay rent in the next couple of days. I’m at the counter ch checking out, when the bro saw the scratch-off machine, he was like “I’m going to buy some scratch-offs”. I said, “whatever do you”. He got his scratch-offs and went to the car. I finished checking out inside of Wawa and I went to the car. I got in the car and bro is crying! I’m like bro what are you crying for? What’s going on?
He shows me some scratch-off tickets and he said: “look I won, I got a gold nugget!” It was a Gold Rush scratch and if you got a gold nugget that meant 1 million dollars. On top of that bro said it’s a fresh roll of scratch-off tickets I asked how do you know? He said the ticket it #1. I said, what does that mean? he said it means we have a higher chance of winning all the winning tickets on this roll if we buy the whole roll and we can pay rent!
I started to think about what bro was saying at the moment, I didn’t see how we could lose. Gambling is risky, but bro just won, he got a gold nugget, that’s a million already, is what I was thinking. Each scratch-off ticket was $2 and it was 200 tickets per roll, we bought the whole roll and gambled with the money we had for rent. Because in our minds we already got a million dollars in the bank so rents taken care of, car situations are taken care of, and in our mind, we are the new Bill Gates and the Tesla guy. We bought a whole roll at the gas station, drove back to our apartment and we start scratching tickets.
We just put all of our rent money, into scratch offs tickets so we can get another million dollars, that was the plan that bro came up with. Like I said we’re already one gold nugget up. We’re scratching, win some, lose some, win some lose some. Got another gold nugget, we got happy and kept scratching off. Boom got another gold nugget! We were crazy excited with three million dollars right now. We finally scratched off everything. We had a total of six gold nuggets between us and a couple of free tickets and some play money we won.
We go back to the Wawa gas station to cash in on our winnings. In my mind I’m thinking about having our picture in the paper, I’m talking so much trash like I was already rich “You know, we may even buy the apartment complex and charge them rent”. We bring our scratch-off tickets to the counter, and that winning lotto sound was sounding off each time a winning ticket went inside the machine. We had the biggest Kool-Aid smiles on our faces. For a brief moment and I do mean brief, I felt no stress just what life should feel like. Then the service attendant said okay here’s your prize past us $300.
I said, “Excuse me, sir, no we had six scratch-offs with gold nuggets, we should have $6 million and $300”. That’s when my heart dropped because the dude said “Well if you read the rules, at the bottom, you’ll see that you would have to win something on the scratch-off for the gold nugget to matter.” There we were standing looking dumb in the face. We just scratched off our entire afternoon and hadn’t won the dang thing. We did get 300 dollars, but we now needed more money for the rent. I haven’t taken a scratch-off risk in the past 6 years now.
Demetrius, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Demetrius Dee Watts stand-up comedian from Pensacola Florida “Pensacola in the house!” And I’m in show business “there’s no better business than show business” but specifically the comedy side of things. That’s something that everybody can be on the lookout for, I’m taking the show worldwide “Come Get These Jokes”. Gives you a reason to laugh. All of my events are memorable and can’t miss occasions. I’m Demetrius D. Watts, the most electrifying comedian, coming out of Pensacola FL, that’s why my last name is Watts
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Some things that Society can do to support creatives would be providing more spaces for creators to be creators where they can perform but have a stage to showcase we need more venues that offer that for creatives without having a massive price tag to use the space to get to creativity out to the world. A lot of venue owners, tend to take advantage it creatives making the prices tag unrealistic at times. Let’s be honest most creative, most of them are low on funds LOL. That would benefit me and others in my opinion.
For example, I’m in Orlando Florida, and there are only 3 nights for comedy, with one place to do on those days. I would like to have 3-4 options a night, seven days a week. That’s how you get better in my discipline.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
The battle between two worlds. The real world and your dreams, It’s like a high acrobatic balancing act. To keep your priorities together and staying hungry while dream chasing .
