We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Demetrius Washington. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Demetrius below.
Demetrius, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
Biggest trends currently In the photography world. Film for sure! I think a lot of popular creatives are shooting film & digital. It gives a different look than digital. That you cant put your finger on besides its film & how the artist uses it. It’s a whole different world than digital which I respect. It’s also scary because of the fragility of film cabers & the film itself.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Im a fashion & celebrity photographer based in Atlanta currently. I got into photography when I was around 16 years old. I started out shooting my friends who were seniors. That lead into portrait photography for a few years. Everything from shooting weddings, kids, families, etc. I always knew that fashion was my end goal when I started. I just didn’t know how or when to transition into that space.
I think what sets me apart from some other photographers. I started with a heavy background in natural lit portrait photography. I love natural light so everything you see in my work is natural light. Which shocks some because some of my work looks lit with lighting. Before I started forming my teams I was the solo creative on set. I would build the set, style the model, assist with hair, shoot & edit the images. start to finish so I just have a knowledge in each department. I always have a clear vision on set with clients which translates into an easy set day for everyone.
Im most proud of my growth in this industry. If you ask any creative they’d probably say the same. where I was years ago, or a month ago is insane. I took a leap into fashion in 2019 & haven’t looked back. Fast forward to when I met my manager Mckenzie Mann! OMG she literally is life changing. I gained so much more knowledge on the behind the scenes in my industry.
My work always usually revolves around woman & bold fashion. I think when you look at some of the work you feel empowered the women I shoot. I absolutely love color in any form we can get in my work. From the set, styling, or makeup however we can get it in. My brand is growing as well with a few secret things coming out next year. So stay tuned because you never know what i’ll do.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Best source of new clients for me are social media & word of mouth/ networking. I think that’s a strong suit of mine. I love going out & just chatting to creatives who just get it. Social media has been around since I was in late middle school. So it’s forever changing and growing which I love. I like when new exciting things pop up. It’s just a new opportunity to learn and connect with people you’d never be in a room with.A lot of my new clients have found me on instagram through a weird hashtag or geolocation. Which is crazy but not really in this world we live in right now.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I made a huge pivot in 2019. I kinda touched on it earlier. Back in 2018 I was shooting tons of weddings, families, & seniors. It was my main source of income. Thats what I was known for In my hometown. So I was constantly driving back and forth from Atlanta for 2-3 sessions a day. Something clicked when I was driving back to Atlanta. I just felt this shift in me that it was time to start in fashion.
So very briefly I contacted my clients who had been long time clients. Letting them know I will be moving over to more fashion & celeb photography. Basically dropping all of my clients I’d known for years & new ones. I gave recommendations to other photographers in that field. It was absolutely scary to make that change.
Fast forward January 2019 I shot a personal fashion editorial with my friend Oliver. I felt just at home shooting more creative work. Shortly after it got placed in a magazine I have always looked up to. I feel like it was the universe just confirming where I was supposed to be.
