We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Demetrius Murray a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Demetrius, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I started Photography with the idea to save money on not having to pay a photographer. My wife was pregnant with our 4th child, we have 3 boys and we finally was about to have a baby girl. This was going to be special and I needed to capture every moment. I had plans to capture the maternity photos, her first birthday and any other special occasion that came up.
Let’s just say I got stopped at the Maternity photos. Photography wasn’t as easy as I thought it was going to be. The maternity photos didn’t come out like the ones I’ve seen on Instagram. Me being a problem solver I developed a burning desire to find out why my photos didn’t look like the ones I’ve researched. After countless Youtube videos and days of practicing lighting on my family, a friend of my wife reached out and trusted me enough to take their family photos. This was my first paid job so I was excited but yet nervous. Nervous of failing. During this session everything I studied and practiced kicked in and the rush I got from photographing and exploring this new creative side made me want more.
After a few more paid jobs and the positive feedback from clients, my wife came up with the idea of starting a Photography business so DMurray Photography was born.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Demetrius owner of DMurray Photography. I’m a Branding Photographer based in Middletown DE. I’m originally from Philadelphia and worked as a Paramedic in the city of Philadelphia. I went from a ER paramedic to a Flight Paramedic and now I’m a Full-time Photographer.
In Paramedic school we were taught to take lead in every situation. When you arrive on scene you are the one calling the shots and everyone is looking to you for the next step. This is where I found my voice and learned how to take control. I took this knowledge and adapt it to my photo sessions. Majority of my clients book with zero direction and It’s easy for me to provide direction and take control in all my sessions. Not only does this provides comfort to my clients it sets me apart from most photographers.
The thing that I’m most proud about is building something from nothing. This came from a simple thought and now bigger brands are reaching out because they love my work.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Quitting my job a year ago as a Full-time Flight Paramedic and taking a leap of faith. I believe when starting out in any business your totally moving from belief and to be able to believe in your business and continue to push each and every day illustrates resilience.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The great thing about becoming a photographer is the low startup costs to start your business. I brought my first camera and lens from QVC and paid it off in six installments. This allowed me to start photographing right away. Every paid job I received I invested back into the business by purchasing better equipment.
