We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Demetris Elia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Demetris below.
Demetris, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I’m an immigrant from a small island called Cyprus. Needless to say that I do not have many connections in the United States, let alone in the Dallas – Fort Worth metroplex.
I came here to become a Doctor of Chiropractic which I had completed in April of ’19. Upon graduating, I had to wait about 9 months before I could actually practice due to immigration paperwork.
In December of 2019, I got a position in an office that was excited to help improve and contribute. Unfortunately, COVID19 put a stop to that. As businesses shut down and the future was uncertain for many business owners, I was let go. That’s when I decided to open my own practice and go mobile.
As I started my own practice, the only way I could grow was with word of mouth. But with no connections in the city, that’s impossible to do. My passion is to improve people’s lives so they can live an easier, free-of-pain life. With a passion like that and no way to show it, it was heartbreaking. I also believe that the more lives I am able to impact, the better this world would be. When people are in less pain, they are able to act from a place of gratitude and joy, which the world definitely needs more of.
This place of gratitude and joy is what moved my patients to refer their families and friends to me! I even had patients call me into their companies and treat all the employees, which in turn tell their people!
It has been amazing to see the response of people when you help them out.
Demetris, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At PEAKiropractic our mission is to impact our patients’ lives through health education and mobile services so they can live an exceptional life.
All our services are mobile and we treat patients 7 days a week, from 8am to 8pm. Because we know that life doesn’t take a break and we wouldn’t want you sitting on the sidelines.
We provide mobile chiropractic, massage therapy, weight loss solutions, and functional medicine consultations.
I initially came to the US on a full scholarship from hammer throwing. During my career here in the US, I had low back pain that I knew could go away, if someone would just “crack it”. That’s when I found out that “cracking” people’s backs was a profession called chiropractic.
There was a chiropractor that would visit the athletic department at my school once a month and he would adjust 40-50 student-athletes. Needless to say, he came into the room with a negative attitude. What ended up happening after that first treatment, is me being stuck for a whole week not being able to train or compete. But I knew that whatever this “chiropractic” was worked when you had good intentions and positive energy.
Because I don’t want anyone to ever experience the same thing as I did, and have a negative feeling about chiropractic, I decided to be one myself.
Today, I help people that are stuck in bed, on the floor, right out of the ER, and all sorts of complaints. This morning, one of my patients called me a “magician” because I helped a ganglion cyst in her wrist go away in a few minutes of treatment. See the thing is not if chiropractic works. It’s its application of it that needs to be evaluated. Just like there are good and bad professionals in every industry, chiropractic is no different.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As mentioned earlier, COVID19 change a lot of my plans.
But I do not look back now. I am thankful for all the good and bad that came through my life and looking forward to what the future holds. And I know its bright.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
In chiropractic, you need a passion for helping people live a better life. If that is not where your mind is, then it will be hard to succeed.
Especially when things go wrong, it is this passion that lights the flame, and knowing you are doing the right thing that gives yo the drive to keep pushing forward.
