We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Deme Jackson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Deme, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea for The Lotus Club (TLC) emerged from a deeply personal journey marked by challenges and triumphs. As someone who has navigated the complexities of societal challenges firsthand, I understand the struggles Black women face in their personal and professional lives. The inspiration for TLC is rooted in my own experiences of bullying in corporate environments and being laid off under the guise of not being a “cultural fit.” These experiences, filled with frustration and disillusionment, resonated deeply with the systemic barriers and microaggressions that Black women encounter daily.
The turning point came when I realized that these adversities were not just isolated incidents but part of a broader pattern of exclusion and marginalization. This realization ignited a beacon of hope, fueling my determination to create a space where Black women could find the support, community, and resources they need to not just survive but thrive. The vision for TLC was born out of a desire to transform my adversities into a platform for empowerment, ensuring that other Black women would not have to face these challenges alone.
Why This Endeavor is Worthwhile:
The logic behind TLC was clear: Black women navigate a complex intersection of racial and gender biases that can impede their personal and professional growth. By providing a supportive community and tailored resources, TLC aims to dismantle these barriers and create an environment where Black women can fully embrace their authenticity, develop leadership skills, and achieve their potential without constraints. This mission is not just about uplifting individual women but creating a ripple effect across communities and industries.
Solving a Unique Problem:
TLC addresses an often overlooked problem: the systemic barriers and stereotypes that Black women face. While many organizations focus on women’s empowerment, few specifically address the unique challenges Black women encounter. TLC’s approach is a breath of fresh air, unique because it combines a focus on mental health, professional development, and advocacy, offering a holistic support system that caters specifically to the needs of Black women.
The Excitement Behind the Idea:
What excites me most about TLC is the potential for systemic change. Empowering Black women to excel and lead creates more diverse, equitable, and inclusive societies and workplaces. It challenges and changes the narrative around Black women’s roles and capabilities, promoting a more just and balanced world. The prospect of seeing Black women embrace their authenticity, rise to leadership positions, and influence positive change in their communities is what drives me every day.
Creating TLC has been a journey of turning personal struggles into a collective strength. It ensures every Black woman knows she is celebrated, uplifted, and heard. This mission is my passion and a vital initiative for creating a more equitable world for all.

How’d you meet your business partner?
I met my co-founder, Mirasha Brown, in 2019 while working at the City of Dallas. We instantly connected during our first interaction. What stood out to us was the remarkable number of similarities we shared. Not only are we both proud graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), but we also happen to be Virgos.
Our shared experiences navigating the complexities of the workforce created a strong bond. We both faced similar challenges and frustrations, which made our connection even more meaningful. We channeled our mutual passion for advocacy into developing the City of Dallas’ first young professional Employee Resource Group (ERG) called FUEL.
Our collaborative efforts and shared vision for change solidified our partnership. Over the years, our professional relationship blossomed into a deep friendship and sisterhood. Five years later, this sisterhood became the foundation for co-founding TLC. Together, we remain committed to holding companies accountable for creating inclusive environments where diverse voices are heard and valued.
