Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to DeMarcus DuBose . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
DeMarcus , appreciate you joining us today. Has Covid resulted in any major changes to your business model?
Actually, COVID-19 was when my business ‘DuBose Visuals LLC’ was birthed. When everything was shut down, like most, I had a lot of time on my hands so I started playing around with my Iphone recording my niece, daughter, and who ever else would allow myself to record them. I didn’t think much of this newly found passion of mine until I was asked by a friend to seriously consider pursuing this field after assisting our church with navigating through live streaming. I continued to get better and invest in more professional equipment to enhance how I am able to effectively tell my client’s story through my lens. So in a nutshell, COVID changed my business for the best as I did not have one prior.
DeMarcus , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am originally from Montgomery, AL. I was fortunate enough to attend the University of Alabama and win two national titles as a walk-on in 2009 & 2011. Often I get asked, “Why didn’t I want to go to the NFL?” when people figure out my past accomplishments, I jokingly respond “I turned it down to be amongst yourself”. In all seriousness, it was a goal of mine to someday get the opportunity to play in the NFL but that dwindled as playing time in my stint at Alabama was minimal at best being just a role player. What stood out most was the fact that Coach Saban told me that one day someone was going to tell me that I wouldn’t be able to play football anymore and I needed to know what I was going to do afterward. This was the beginning for me in navigating life after football and figuring out my life’s purpose. I moved to Tupelo, MS in 2014 to work in marketing for a tobacco company and my plan originally was to work my way up the corporate ladder within this company which would require me to relocate. But, as the saying goes “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans”. I ended up getting engaged to my now wife Courtney DuBose in 2017 and got married the following year in 2018. We got the house, dog, and whole nine yards. As I stated previously when COVID took place DuBose Visuals was birthed. I would record my daughter, niece, or anyone that would let me. I continued to get better and I would also serve in the media ministry at my local church White Hill Missionary Baptist Church harnessing this skill. It wasn’t until I was asked by a friend to seriously consider pursuing this new realm after being a willing vessel in serving. I continued to invest in this newly found passion by purchasing more professional equipment and upgrading from my iPhone. This was when I discovered that this was my purpose in life to tell others’ stories through my lens. I got my start in the videography industry ironically enough by recording live production for local gospel groups and artists such as stellar award-winning singer Josh Myles, Keith “Wonderboy” Johnson, George Dean, and Pastor Darrel Petties to name a few. The discipline that I obtained from playing college football assists my current efforts in working a full-time job by day, videographer by night, and being a loving husband/father. I offer videography services for weddings, engagements, birthdays, Youtube channel(s), corporate commercials, or promotional videos for your respective business or church. I have just added photography services for weddings as well. It is my goal to tell your story whatever it may be through my lens and take the burden of production off of you! I can stand in the gap for customers who do not want to be faced with the riggers of trying to film and edit quality videos. I am most proud of just the process and the journey to this point. Starting from just utilizing an iPhone to where I am currently and recently being nominated for “Video Producer of the Year” in the Gospel Triangle Music Awards for my work that was done in the gospel music industry this year is truly a blessing! I would like for potential clients, followers, and supporters to know that this is truly an example of one being obedient to what I believe God has called me to do because I never would have imagined I would be doing this at this point. DuBose Visuals will pay close attention to the details, cross every “T” and dot every “I” when allowed to work with you!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn or constantly remind myself that perfection is the goal but not achieved. Also, stop comparing my work to someone that may or may not be more experienced than myself. I had to learn to be confident that the gift God planted inside of me will make room for me. Quick story: I was blessed with an opportunity to film the live production for stellar award-winning gospel artists last year (’21) and it was my first time doing such. I was nervous and felt like I was back in college playing football again. But, the nerves were because I had never done this before and in preparation, I thought it would be wise to study others that had done this in the past. The issue with this was that I didn’t have nearly the amount of experience or equipment they had. What ultimately allowed the nerves to subside was the fact that I had a vision of how I wanted this project to look & feel. To make a long story short, we released this project this year and large in part I would like to think that the response to this album contributed to being nominated for an award.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for myself has been a combination of word of mouth client referrals as well as social media.
