We recently connected with Delores Curry and have shared our conversation below.
Delores, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was a little girl I always loved to sing! I started listening to singers like Mariah Carey, Anita Baker, Jodeci, Brandy, SWV, and so many more & just fell in love with music. When I got a little older I sang in church, joined the advanced choir in high school, and went on to take music theory later.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I go by the stage name Native Doll as a way to pay homage to my Native American heritage (Occaneechi-Saponi). I’m a female musician who sings, raps, write songs, and makes beats.
I’m also known as “The Songstress” because of my love for music! Some of my favorite artists are: JT (City Girls), Lil Wayne, Mariah Carey, 2 Chainz, Eminem, Bone Thugs & Harmony, Future, Latto, Princess Nokia, Flo Milli, Missy Elliott, and Toni Braxton just to name a few!
After taking a break from making and recording music, I began writing songs again, and eventually recording, as a way to express my feelings. At the time my husband, Jeffery, and I were not seeing eye to eye and I needed a healthy outlet. We actually ended up on Divorce Court (Season 25, Ep 36) with our drama! Thankfully, we’re doing much better now.
My husband has been a musician for over 15 years, and he showed me how to record on BandLab, which led to a creative explosion between us! We began writing and making music together, and since then we’ve released several songs and just shot a video for No Sympathy which I’m beyond grateful for and excited about!
There have been several major artists that have contacted me regarding me writing songs for them as well as to buy some of the songs I’ve written and never released. I mean God has opened so many doors for me with music, I don’t even believe it sometimes!!!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the reactions I get from people that hear my music! It’s no greater feeling than knowing you worked hard on something and your creative vision has paid off.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes. I wish I knew more about marketing and advertising before I started making music, but I feel like I’m learning more each day.
