We were lucky to catch up with Delores Baker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Delores thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
I came up with the idea for Baker’s Learning Kitchen based on my 20 + years of experience tutoring different students. At our company we focus on individualized tutoring. We only offer one-on-one tutoring and that’s for a major reason! I understand we could make more money and service more people simultaneously if we offered group tutoring, but it isn’t as effective for the student. I realized that everyone has a unique learning style and different barriers that stop them from understanding various concepts. So, we focus on building confidence in each student by finding their unique learning style and creating better learning methods and study habits to help them succeed! We treat every student and session like we’re in the kitchen creating a recipe just for their learning success!

Delores, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Baker’s Learning Kitchen provides in-person and virtual tutoring services for Pre-K through college students in math, reading, science, ACT Prep and SAT Prep. This company was founded in 2020. I have tutored math and reading since I was in middle school at the kitchen table with my mom, who was an assistant principal and elementary teacher. With both of my parents being educators, the importance of education was instilled in me at an early age. When the pandemic hit, I had too high of a demand for tutoring, so I started reaching out to other qualified tutors to help us out. God gave both my husband and me the vision in 2019! I was so happy it birthed in 2020! We focus on building confidence, enhancing skills and conquering educational concepts!

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
My advice in managing a team and maintaining a high morale is to simply treat the team like you’d want to be treated. In any relationship, I try to 1) Know my role, 2) Do what I am asked 3) Make my team look good, and 4) Protect my team. I treat our amazing tutors the same way. I love writing letters of recommendations for them, having company sponsored meals/luncheons and just getting to know them as people. Once most people feel that you truly care about them, they will operate at high level of performance and love their job!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Our goal is to help as many students and families that value educational excellence as we can! We have some things brewing that will allow us to really connect with families who can’t afford private tutoring services (fingers crossed) and that will assist them in achieving their career goals in life! We take seriously our blessing of being able to employ people with part-time work in education and STEM. We also would love to open more locations of Baker’s Learning Kitchen in the future! Stay tuned!!
