We were lucky to catch up with Delonoe Baker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Delonoe thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Since I was little, I’ve always been fascinated with drawing, coloring and creating something from my imagination. If I would have dabbled in different mediums and or taking more art classes, I think it would have sped up my learning process as a younger artist. The most essential skills would be persistence, having tough skin and having the thirst for knowledge. Staying persistent has helped me with building momentum and staying active with new and old clients. Having tough skin and helped me stay away from negativity and has allowed me to build confidence within myself. Staying thirsty for knowledge has helped me with learning new things and has helped to progress my artistry. Things that have been obstacles in keeping me from learning would be me getting complacent and being too comfortable instead of keeping motion.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been fascinated with art whether I create it or if I’m just an admirer. I work with a lot of newspaper in my art dealing with characters from cartoons, anime, and comics. I’m in the process of branching out from the characters into more of my own designs and other materials besides canvases. I believe what sets me apart would be my use of the newspaper and space I creat with my characters on the paintings. What I’m most proud of is the feedback I receive from clients and admirers. They’ve all been positive and reassuring that what I’m doing is unique and that I should definitely continue on this artistic pathway. I want people to know that Oldnws is a feeling of contrast and time. From black and white articles of real life events scattered throughout a piece, being covered with a colorful nonfiction character marrying each other in a vintage, worn aesthetic with that pop of color still prevalent.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Being able to do what I truly love for a living and creating that natural freedom an artist thrives on.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Completing your creation and reaching the point to when you can show it off to the world. Sitting back and remembering that it started off as an idea and now seeing that you’ve manifested it into physicality.
