We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Delma Gomes . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Delma below.
Hi Delma , thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later.
Personally talking , I don’t thing that there’s a right time to start a business. I started mine during one of the most unfortunate periods of humankind. When I first decided to start my business, I basically did it out of boredom and the need to keep myself busy during the quarantine period. Looking back , I realize how bold of a decision that was. People were literally avoiding eating out as much as they could , and there I was , starting a baking business. I don’t regret starting “late “, just because I know that my motivation to stay busy , was higher than ever … so a business definitely filled that void .
Delma , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, my name is Delma. I consider myself an aspirant baker that decided to make that as business. I bake a lot of different goodies, from homemade cakes to wedding cakes and many more. Being a solo business owner can be challenging , because I have to deal with everything by myself and it can be tricky at times. Despite all the challenges, I’m proud to see how much my business grew and how far I’ve come. I literally went from selling small goodies to people in my circle , to reaching out different nationalities and people from different backgrounds. Seeing everyone enjoying my cakes , gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Procrastinating!!! Lord, I can never stress enough the importance of good planning and sticking with it. When I first started, I was on my first semester as a senior at the university. My schedule was very tight and the demand kept growing. I remember one day I had my exam and an order around the same time. Long Story short, I didn’t start baking earlier , thinking that I could do everything in few hours and leave just in time for my exam . Not only was I late for my order , but I ended up messing up on my exam and almost failed. My point here is , plan accordingly and leave room for error. A business like baking, good planning comes in handy. Procrastinating will only lead to bad work being done , and additional stress added to one’s life .
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I started my cake business, without a professional cake mixer , cause I couldn’t afford one. I literally had to buy a second hand one, that helped me make the cakes to this day. Eventually, I was able to buy a Brand new one, but I didn’t allow that to slow me down or stop me. Another issue that I encounter , was not having an extra fridge for my cakes … and as always , I bought a second one and have been using that ever since. I’ve learned to overcome all the Don’ts and No’s. I also learned that there will always have something missing , and unless you put yourself out there , you won’t start a business or make a move. Not to mention the struggle to manage my school , personal life and being a full time business owner. The struggle was REAL , but I’m glad I didn’t give up and continued with my journey. I still have struggles working by myself, but I’m determined to keep doing what I love , despite all the challenges.
