We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dellonna Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dellonna , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
When I first began my business launch in marketing 2 years ago, I’d been looking for an assistant. Like, I literally looked up and down, left and right but no one seemed to reach out to me. I started thinking “Well, maybe its not time for one’”. I soon became to understand that it wasn’t because of my work ethics but simply how I went about acquiring a new intern. Attracting just “anyone” into my business probably would’ve caused major downfalls not only to me but to my future team members. I guess you could say that my intentions behind gravitating towards someone that wasn’t on the same page as the company— wasn’t in my best interest. I remember praying so many nights for the help that I have now. Now that I’ve ensured the foundation of my career, everything became a better navigation along the way. The best part of this journey was finding someone who fufilled the same ambitions as me and wanted to not only build their own dreams but uplift mines as well. I found my crowd and eventually my alignment of the people I needed, soon fell into place. You can go fast; alone, but you wont go far.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Growing up I always knew that I wanted to make a positive impact on the world—I just didn’t know where to start. I knew I always had a passion for reading and writing so I started writing by the age of 5. I would go and write musicals, poems, spelling, etc. Of course this was back when we had phonics books and everything was simpler. At the age of 8, I entered my first spelling bee contest and would’ve went to nationals but unfortunately, the man above had other plans. My 8th grade year came around and I joined a program where I’d be peer mediator. I knew I was good at helping people with their problems so why not help. This would have been the catalyst to a life long future career.
In high school , I would visit my old grammar schools and talk to my peers about the journey of leveling up to new positions. Becoming a psychologist to study the brain and helping people operate throughout their path became a dream of mines. At 16, I started going to cosmetology school where I learned the rules of creating a business. We learned how to create names, LLC’s and type up projected income sources for a startup plan. The gems that were being taught was great but somewhere along the line, I learned that hair just wasn’t my purpose— it was simply a hobby that I was great at. I knew I had a bigger calling and I walked away from it.
Let’s fast forward 3 years. I had my fair share with police encounters and landed myself in a tight situation. I sat myself down and took a long break from the world and thats when COVID-19 hit. In this time, I had to find a work from home positions and jobs were hard of finding due to my background. I was young, broke and starving for a better future. A friend of mines introduced me to digital marketing where I learned how to trade stocks and become a future leadership entrepreneur . I had nothing else to lose so I went for it. In the 2 years that Ive been a leader, I’ve met so many other dope and amazing 6-8 figure entrepreneurs; some even being my very own personal mentors. I created relationships and bonds that I would cherish forever. Over the years, Ive helped people land their own journey to success, 6 figure incomes and have the honor to teach them about new skills.
It was just a matter of time before I started my very own show on all social platforms called “True Identity Evaluation (T.I.E )”. The shows depicts how we gaze through this walk of life when we’re being hit with the curveballs and finding yourself. If you have a sense for deeper purpose and connection with self improvement/alignment, this show is for you. I am now in the making of launching my very first smoothie company in 2023 for my health journey. I will be offering coaching, mental health and fitness courses during this upcoming year. If you’re reading this, be sure to stay tuned! Good reads and raw materials.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I study the way of life and its meaning. This helps me better understand my peers and keep a level head when addressing any situations in life or conflict for that matter. It’s a gift that that I have to keep perfecting and taking my time to really grasp how I can use it for not only myself but for the good of others. I’m always learning and reading something new to keep myself motivated to my career. It’s not easy. But the good things in life never are. When the whole world around you is partying but you have to be the sober one; that’s kind of what this field feels like.
Always put your mental and physical health first always. That is one of the main things I teach my clients when they ask what’s the next step. We find ourselves trying to be “busy” and getting ahead when in reality, we’re slowing ourselves down because that’s not what the body really wants or need. It shows up in more effective ways than you think. If my health and mental is rapidly dealing, there is nothing I can do for anyone because I simply cannot help myself. The one thing you can do for the world is always make sure you’re giving 100% in the areas where you are needed the most. If you cannot give that: take a break, ease, relax and come back to everything else when the time is right.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
This past year alone, I had lost 2 of my siblings, went homeless, got into a car accident and started gaining weight. Overall, I was unhappy and wasn’t myself for the longest. Nobody showed up. I had to do the work on my own. I had to KNOW I wanted change and that it was time for a new growth, new environment. Sometimes, its hard to pick yourself back up when you get kicked down a lot. That’s fine. One step at a time and having the faith of a mustard seed is the only current that you need. This time, I decided to be extremely patient with myself. When incidents occurred, I used to try to hop back into work as if my mental wasn’t affected, as if I didn’t need space to breathe. This time, I needed everything and then some. I need myself more than ever. I knew one day I was gonna get back up— just never knew when.
3 am, I got a call from a good friend of mine asking if we could host another show but I wasn’t in the best head space to create nor did I have a positive bone in my body. My higher, “ambitious-like” conscious wanted me to win so bad but I had been so stuck in a lower vibration that I couldn’t see anything beyond my situations. I declined the offer and said that maybe when I get a break that I would do it. A month or two, flew by and I found myself working on headlining new projects and staying in the gym to keep me sane. I was listening to a sermon where the pastor said “ If you keep waiting on good things to happen to you to get started, you’ll be waiting forever. You have to start creating to memories. Start creating your own happy place because that’s the worlds intentions.” That was all the reminder I need to get back up and put my game face back on. I started planning out more ideas for next year, eating back healthy, went into isolation to grind out these next 3 months, shut out social media, and went completely tunnel vision.
Every day, I show gratitude to the good friends and family that help motivate you when you need to hear it. I’ve been able to accomplish by dreaming big and focusing on the tunnel vision. You can either let your storms make or break you. Some of them did break me but as of now, that’s not an option anymore. Not when there’s work to do and a world that’s waiting to hear back from me.
