Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dellanee Nicole . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dellanee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I remember graduating high school and before I graduated I was doing hair on the side for my friends at school. My Grandmother asked if I wanted to go to hair school and I was thinking it won’t be so bad so yes I’ll go. I completed hair school not having the slightest idea what I wanted to do next. After passing state board I still had no idea what I wanted to do so I got a job. Throughout the years I would take clients and do their hair and I was getting established by word of mouth. After having 2 kids and basically starting over, doing hair isn’t something I was into doing. Years pass and I just continued to work. I then moved to the country and at that time I wasn’t working so I was putting myself out there that I was back taking clients. I eventually started working in a salon just giving it a try because I always had said I would never work for anybody I just can’t but I did anyway. It was so hard. I worked there for a brief time barely getting clients and barely able to pay booth rent. It was either I pay booth rent or my house rent. So I packed my things and went back home to do hair. I got a job and was still taking clients. After leaving that job I was taking clients full time. I was getting business but not like I knew I could so I knew I needed to hustle. When I saw that lace frontals were trending and becoming a thing in the hair industry I told myself I have got to learn how to do those like I took it more serious. So I stepped my game up and got it together to teach myself how to install a lace front. Once again I got another job. I felt like I wasn’t getting enough clients. The more I kept practicing the more and more clients I was starting to get. At this time I had my full time job working 40 plus hours a week juggling doing hair and taking care of home. Before I knew it my clientele had increased drastically to the point where I thought I was overwhelming myself. That moment I knew it was time to take my business seriously. I came up with the name Nicole’s Hair Boutique. I sell hair extensions, wigs, accessories and more. Now I have my own shop in my backyard. It was the best investment ever
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I honestly don’t know what drove me to be a hairstylist but I’m glad I made the decision to. Making other feel happy about themselves really melts my heart. They feel beautiful all over again. I have clients that have Alopecia and they can’t do anything with their hair so I specialize in that too. Installing/ making custom wigs for them. Right now I’m mainly doing lace installs such as lace wigs, lace frontals and lace closures.. I feel most proud that I did it. I never thought I would be where I’m at today. I may not be at the top but I’m getting there. I’m well known for my talent. I’m just trying to get worldwide with it I want to do more in the hair industry. I haven’t decided on whats next for me but starting my business was a start and I achieved that goal.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I funded my business right out of my pocket. No loans no nothing. I started investing in hair and would spend thousands before I knew it. I had to keep spending money until I found what I wanted to go with and here Iam thousands dollars later I found what I wanted. Starting out I didn’t want to get into getting loans. I wanted to get a feel for it and start small so that’s what made me invest in just buying hair. Once that took off and I decided to do me a salon I still wasn’t into having help with funding. I also funded that out of pocket.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helped me build reputation is being myself. I’ve never switched on anyone. Showing people my growth and that I knew what I was doing help build my reputation. I never gave up
