We were lucky to catch up with Delisa Harper recently and have shared our conversation below.
Delisa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Zach and I started our business 6 months into dating. Being vegan, we were usually disappointed in restaurants’ dessert options. One day, I bought a vegan crispy treat as a last resort and was pleasantly surprised. It was tasty! But boring. So we created fun flavors of treats that we were excited about, sold them at farmer’s markets, and the rest is history!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Funky Mello is a feel-good food company. We create plant-based marshmallow cremes using clean ingredients, in rich flavors, perfect for your coffee, ice cream, fruit, and more! Our food is made for everyone to enjoy together so we are inclusive of most diets. That means they’re also top 8 allergen-free and gluten-free!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
We’ve had to pivot several times with this business! When we started to get attention from stores we knew we had something special and to make it retail-ready we needed a longer shelf-life. We went from crispy treats to marshmallows to creme over the course of 4 years! Every pivot allowed us to understand our product and our customers even more so that we could really fill a gap in the market.

How’d you meet your business partner?
We actually met through a music festival! Afterwards, Zach invited me to a show with his friends and we had the best time.
