We recently connected with Delilah Porche and have shared our conversation below.
Delilah , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
Man, where do I even begin? Throughout the years, I can say I’ve seen, been through and heard it all, if not almost everything. I’ve had some crazy things happen to me before, but I’m going to talk about one particular situation that happened to me about a year ago, ha!
As a freelance hairstylist, I would always be open to help others any time I was available on occasions where they may have needed an extra hairstylist.
I love what I do, so helping others doing what I already love doing was a win-win for everyone.
However, after many times of helping somebody else with their events and investing so much of my time and hard work for little pay, it quickly became a problem.
It went from getting paid immediately for my work, to waiting to get paid.. to then having to ask where and when I’d get paid. Eventually I was getting ignored and not paid for all the weddings I’d worked.
It eventually became a big hassle and stressful time, because this is what I do full time to provide for my family. My job is not a hobby or a side hustle, but now a days a lot of people treat artists as if you don’t deserve what you work for.
Moving forward, I was owed over $2K by this group of people I was doing hair for. If it would of been like $20 or even $100, I would of honestly taken an L and kept it moving but that wasn’t the case. Also, I wasn’t the only one who was getting scammed by these people. A lot of artists and even clients were as well!
Fast forwarding, after a month or so of going back and forward, trying to get the law involved dealing with that headache, I was able to get like 80% of what I was owed and decided to take a loss on the rest because I was over it. I learned my lesson to be more strict on what I do and who I do it for.
That was the craziest thing I can say happened to me. It really blows my mind how someone can take advantage and use someone just for money. We all have bills, families and things to pay for, take care of!
I stand strong on supporting local businesses. Entrepreneurs. Artists and creators! It really takes hard work to become somebody and be successful, specially when you’re doing everything on your own.
One thing I took from that experience was to be cautious and prepared for anything and everything. Always be 3 steps ahead, so when things like these happen, you are ready to defend yourself and what’s yours.
Life is a journey. Never be discouraged by the bumps on the road. Those are the best parts of your story!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hello, my name is Delilah Porche. I am a professional hairstylist based in the DFW area! My business name is DelightsBeauty.
I specialize in bridal hairstyling, but I also do hair for different occasions, such as the following..
Fashion shows, photoshoots/editorial, quinceañeras/birthdays, maternity, anniversaries, any event honestly.
I love hairstyling! Creating different styles is my favorite part. I love the challenge of doing things I’ve never done before. It helps me grow and realize my full potential.
I am a traveling artist in Texas, but I am so happy to announce that I am now available for worldwide hairstyling services as well!
My goal is to be a celebrity artist! Mark my words when I say, next time you see or read about me THATS GOING TO BE MY REALITY!
I am working on so many things right now that I cannot say but I am beyond excited! Just know a lot of great things are coming.
There are many more services I will be adding and providing in 2023, y’all just be ready!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I first started my business, I was really hard on myself. I had a lot of self doubt. Mentally I would beat myself up over not getting enough clients or messing up sometimes. Thinking I’m not good enough. Not giving myself grace and realizing that I was in a new city, starting from scratch, having nothing to show for and trying to put my name out there.
I am glad I didn’t give up! I kept pushing through the negative. I love all and any downfalls or mistakes I make now, because it shows that I am HUMAN! Every bad moment, it’s a teaching moment. There’s always a lesson to take out of a bad situation.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe being kind, respectful and a woman of my word has helped tremendously with my reputation. I’ve built a lot of working relationships with people by being reliable and trustworthy.
The key is to communicate and do what you say you’re going to do, is that simple.
