Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Deligah Grier. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Deligah, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was in grade school and a big fan of poetry by Maya Angelou. As time went on I grew interested in Hiphop/Rap. When I began to study the pattern of the word I noticed this was just poetry. Something that I would write to the girl I had a crush on in grade school. Fast forward to the first time I heard the Electronic Artist “Moby”. I was amazed at what an instrumental song could do. I was moved by how he used samples to create a feeling. That’s when I knew I wanted to experiment with making my own music.
It was all about hiphop in the beginning but my music never felt with the times. It was as if I was creating beats and melodies of some futuristic style of music. So I pushed my creativity to be different and impactful.
Deligah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Born in Columbus, GA, raised in Atlanta, GA now based in Nashville Tennessee. I my his start as a rapper when he was 14 years old. Years later I was given a Roland MPC 3000 from and good friend. After mastering the music production on the MPC I move on to computer based sequence production with Cakewalk’s software. My first complete album as a solo artist was engineered, produced, and released “City Streets”. This album caught the attention of two independent labels which were distributed by Universal Records. Although my work didn’t get a major release. I sold it hand to hand on the City Streets of Atlanta. I performed as a rapper all over the Southeast Region selling out shows at small venues. Landing a headline performance at the Historic Cotton Club in Atlanta. My instrumental productions are inspired by Hiphop, alternative music, dance music of the 80’s and 90’s. Music with infectious melodies, synth and electro references and combinations.
Also as LEDGRIA Stone I’ve used my monotone voice to release several alternative music songs that are rich in love and painful stories of his quest for love.
My collection of instrumental songs Produced, Engineered and released by Deligah Grier is nothing short of groundbreaking and experimental.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Most creators strive to come out of the box of the normal artistic process and style. The more you’re different it seems the less you’re heard. When creativity is about being different. If only there was a moment in musical arts where the out of the box creators can join the circle.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I studied the business of music early in life and this knowledge gave me the information that talked me out of a major recording contract. The label wanted the rights to my publishing. They were surprised that I was resisting the idea of selling my music and publishing so they walked away. I’ve have sense learned the art of negotiation.
