We were lucky to catch up with Delanie Ford recently and have shared our conversation below.
Delanie , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success is a concept that is different for every person, but I do believe that success is something everyone strives to achieve. Whether it is in business or personal life, being committed to your goals is so important. Maintain a positive mindset to keep your motivation high and create a more enjoyable work environment. Also, surround yourself with positive people!
My success came from learning along the way. I feel like you never stop learning, and each day is an adventure. Sometimes things do not work in your favor, you learn from this and move forward. More importantly, is to have fun and keep emotionally positive.
I also attribute my success to my relationships, whether they are personal or professional, I think helping others in their journey will in turn help you succeed in your journey. I was never afraid to ask for help, and I always offered to help in any way I could.
Delanie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always referred to myself as a “Creative Professional”, as I love all things creative and have built my career and lifestyle around as much creative energy as possible. I graduated with a degree in Fashion Design, and immediately opened my own Bridal/Dress studio in Milwaukee. I worked with so many wonderful people creating beautiful garments, I participated in local talent shows, local charities and all of the wonderful local bridal shows.
Feeling I could no longer compete with “Big Box Bridal Shoppes”, My career took a turn to designing socks, slippers and shoes. I loved the creativity in this field, and I was able to travel to some very amazing places, including China. I learned so much from this career, but soon realized that I was drawn to more of the marketing side of the fashion and creative world. I shifted to more behind the scenes- photoshoots, photo styling and social media.
That shift brought me to my current position of Director of Operations for Avery and Birch Beauty Suites, which keeps me on my toes, and still allows my creativity in marketing and events. I also opened a craft coffee bar with my husband called Java James.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is such a great tool to help build your business clientele! There are so many creative ways to showcase your business, your employees, your products, etc. The best way to build your audience is slow and steady. Over posting and over sharing can cause people to unfollow you or lose interest.
My advice is to always post quality content, keep engaging with other businesses or creatives, and be consistent! Don’t get discouraged if your audience doesn’t build overnight, it takes time to build a loyal audience that will definitely pay off in the end!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being present. Whether it is engaging with my coworkers, other industry peers or competitors, and most importantly maintaining consistent branding. Building a reputation takes time and consistent effort. By focusing on quality and genuine engagement with others, you can maintain a strong and respected reputation in your market.
