We were lucky to catch up with Delaney White recently and have shared our conversation below.
Delaney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents are my biggest supporters in life. I was a crazy child (still am) and they kept up with all of it. they were up with me at 6 am for choir in grade school. They pushed me to go to my lacrosse practices even when I really did not want to go. My mom signed me up for the best voice teacher that she could find in our area. She asked her friends what theatre their kids were involved in, and when it came to my career and my college degree, She was up at 4:00 am sitting in the freezing cold outside of Pearl Studios to hold a place in line for me so I could sleep in before my auditions. They supported me in every way that they knew how. My mother wanted to be a singer but didn’t know where to begin, so she made it a point to not let her child miss the same opportunity. My dad on the other hand is an engineer who did not necessarily grow up with the arts. I was worried that he would want me to explore something more “financially stable” and perform as a hobby. But he proved me wrong. He drove me to and from every rehearsal and practice and sat with me to break down financials for how to survive with this lifestyle. They weren’t the theatre parents you hear about but they did what they could and I’m more than thankful for them
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those who don’t know me, I’m Delaney White. I am an actress through and through. Musical theatre, Plays, Film or television, you name it, I’m there. I started singing as soon as I could and from that point on, I knew I wouldn’t want anything else in my life. I started community theatre at a young age and never looked back. I’m currently in college earning my BFA in musical theatre but will soon be fully out into the world doing what I love. I’m a bartender by trade in between gigs and I love that it constantly keeps me on my toes. It’s also a great way to network myself and meet people I never thought I’d meet while still working towards my degree.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
there’s always this question spinning in the back of my head. “Why am I doing this?” or “What is pushing me to continue on this path?”. I never really thought about it till college and one of my professors asked this very question. “Why do it?” Now this is an ever changing question and when I first thought about it, it seemed so simple. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else for the rest of my life that I enjoyed this much. It was just fun. But now that I’ve had more experience and education, it’s changed. Everyone has a story, real or fictional, there’s a story and I want to be a part of telling it. I want to give a voice to those who feel as if they can’t, and find the genuine person behind every character.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Oh of course. Me getting into this business, My mom was always worried about me going into auditions that weren’t really legit. So naturally growing up, I was cautious and hesitant about finding auditions. I didn’t know the right resources like Backstage or Actor’s Access to find reputable jobs. Backstage is also a huge resource for anything in the business. On top of auditions, they have articles about the industry and a full list of agents, managers and casting directors. It’s a great resource if you know how to use it. And even just sitting and playing around on the site for a while can really help learn it too.
