Delaney, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
As a sales and website copywriter, it pays to have an understanding of how modern audiences make decisions about buying. Buyers are smart. They want to feel confident in their purchases, and they need a lot more convincing to feel that confidence.
My priority with Dark Roast Copy Co. (my copywriting business) is to help my clients “say the quiet part out loud.” Since buyers are so smart, you can’t use the same inflated language that has been used in digital marketing for the past decade. You can’t make them feel bad in order to make a sale. You don’t want to sound like you’re “trying too hard” to look like the best.
That’s why I believe in conversational copywriting so much. Instead of sounding like a billboard for your business or LinkedIn summary circa 2010, you’ve got to sound like their most trusted friend or colleague, who gives them the BEST advice and direction over a cup of coffee.

I’m Delaney, the conversational copywriter behind Dark Roast Copy Co. I specialize in writing copy that turns your website from a billboard of your services to a conversation with a friend over a cup of coffee.

One thing I’m proud of is how often my clients say things like, “This sounds exactly like me,” or “You’ve put into words what I couldn’t explain” or “I’m crying, how is your copy so magical?!” The secret is that I’m really good at helping them sound like THEMSELVES. That’s important to me because I know that’s how they’re going to stand out in their industry, drive more sales through their website, and attract more opportunities for their business.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I could get on my soapbox for hours about how nothing in our education system helps you write copy for your business. In school, we’re taught to be professional, hit all the boxes, follow a format, and stick to a structure.
Except, none of that matters when you’re trying to sell for your business.
Good copy comes down to good communication, not hitting all the boxes, (and certainly not being as “professional” as possible.)
I’m a perfectionist by nature. Unlearning all the “rules” of writing in order to communicate clearly has been a journey for me. I see this in many other business owners’ websites before I step in to help them. Helping them simply say “the quiet part out loud” is one of the biggest values in my services, because otherwise, they get stuck in the frameworks and rules like I was for so long.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Currently? I’m all over Threads. Speaking of saying the quiet part out loud, Threads is THE PLACE to be if you want unfiltered, honest perspectives from business owners — with plenty of humor as well.
I’ve seen more and more business owners throw out their Instagram or LinkedIn strategy in favor of platforms that let them be more sustainable in their marketing. Instead of chasing trends, just showing up every day and sharing your perspective is where sustainable marketing is at for me currently.
