Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Del Kary. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Del, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’d say my most meaningful project, so far, is my latest movie, ‘Cheater, Cheater’.
It started out from a Facebook post asking if any writers had ideas or stories that they might be interested in collaborating on and an independent author named Scott Donnelly contacted me about a book he had written titled ‘Cheater, Cheater’. He sent me the book and I couldn’t put it down. I instantly could see certain scenes playing out in my head on the big screen.
So after getting the ok from Scott, I wrote the screenplay based off his novel, and began scouting shooting locations and auditioning actors.
The movie was being shot on an IPhone 12 Pro Max and we were filming for a few months, but had to stop production due to the fact that I needed two more actors casted before we could continue.
I held more auditions, and met two actors named Josh Hodgins and Andy Mendoza. Both fit the roles I was looking for and they both agreed to do the movie.
Josh had told me he used to work in Hollywood for 20-some years, and he had actual movie cameras and lights that we could film the movie with. He also owned a production company and a studio that we could use.
Of course all of this blew my mind because it usually doesn’t happen that way. But I jumped at the offer.
So now we scrapped all the footage we previously filmed, and started over with a new professional camera and lighting, as well as sound gear. And with the help of the production company, Take2Studios, we had extra crew to help with it all.
Still, with everyone’s schedules, we only filmed once, maybe twice a week, making the filming of the movie take just over a year to complete.
Once it was edited and the music score, from the brilliant composer Rusty Forgey, was complete, I took the finished film to the local theater in Yakima, Wa. where the movie was filmed and they premiered it on September 6, 2024 and then ran it for the following two weeks. And in that same week, the limited edition Blu-ray was put up for preorder by SRSCinema.
And with the DVD and streaming on Amazon Prime coming February 11, 2025, it is the gift that keeps on giving.
And to top it all off, during the production of this movie, I became partners with Take2Studios. So it will always hold a very meaningful place in my heart.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started out in the entertainment field back in 1996. The first movie I made was called ‘Video Psycho’ and was shot on a full size VHS camcorder. I had always been filming friends and family since I got my camcorder six years earlier, and in 1996, I met a man who ran an independent film company in New Jersey and we wrote the script for ‘Video Psycho’ and I filmed the movie in the fall of 1996. The company released it on VHS in 1997 and it sold well. After that, I filmed a segment for a movie called ‘Snuff Perversions : Bizzare Cases Of Death’, in which I not only wrote and directed, but also acted in. This movie was also released through the independent company and it sold decently as well.
Then life threw a curveball and my mother developed dementia.
I put all the movie making on the back burner and became my mom’s caregiver. And for anyone who has ever had to care for someone with dementia, they know it is a full time twenty-four hour a day job.
I took care of my mom until she took her last breath in April 2019, and then took the next year to try and figure out what I wanted to do with my life now.
Then in 2020, SRSCinema contacted me about ‘Video Psycho’ and asked if I was interested in re-releasing the movie on Blu-ray for the first time. And cut to 2021 and my first movie is available to purchase once again.
This lit the fire in me again to start directing and producing movies… and since then, I’ve released my latest movie, a horror film, called ‘Cheater, Cheater’ which premiered in the theaters in September 2024 and is currently available on limited edition Blu-ray from SRSCinema and will also be available on DVD and streaming on Amazon Prime starting February 11, 2025.
Since ‘Cheater, Cheater’, I’ve produced a short called ‘If We Are Caught’ and a feature film titled ‘Longshot Danny’, both of which I also served as editor.
The next project I’m producing is titled ‘Incipient’ scheduled to start in the Spring of 2025 and I’m also writing a sequel to ‘Cheater, Cheater’.
So after quite a few years away from doing what I love doing the most, I’m back to making movies and trying to entertain people.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Getting to tell and show stories that entertain and captivate an audience. Letting them escape from their lives for a few hours and have fun.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes, definitely. Local artist. There are so many talented people in your area that you wouldn’t know about unless you start to network and reach out. Actors, directors, producers, writers…. they’re all out there and they have connections and they have connections and once you start to build a small network of talented people you have endless amounts of resources at your finger tips.
