Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to DeJay McNeil. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
DeJay, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
King Dee Entertainment LLC is a space for all artists to share their creativity at lower costs, making it possible to give them a head start in the entertainment industry. The primary focus is film and shows as well as music and interviews. I felt that this would work because I come from a music background. Before gaining my Master’s degree in Film, I received a Bachelor’s in Recording Arts, both from Full Sail University. I was in the Orlando music scene for a good 2 years, and I felt the impact I made was worth 10. However COVID changed my trajectory towards film and other aspects of entertainment. I know what it is like to have a music dream or a film dream and not be able to complete it due to financial issues, etc. That is why I choose to offer lower prices and offer artist more bang for their buck to help give them an experience like no other. That was the problem, a lot of artist get stuck in a cycle of paying for the same thing and never going anywhere with it. I approach this as someone with passion and someone who wants to see everyone succeed ed. That is what makes me excited.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
From my love of storytelling. The main problem is the problem that most people have and that is having the finacial fortitude to complete your dream. Sometimes, you have to sacrifce a year, two years, maybe more, but anything is possible if you really want it and really work hard for it. It takes discipline, patience and the ability to accept rejection and move on. Keep going, because you will never know how far you can get if you quit. I have wanted to quit more times than I can count, but my wife keeps me balanced. She is my comfort I can go to when stressed. Everyone needs someone or something that can do that for them. It is the same with King Dee Entertainment LLC. It takes a build up, but I am most proud of the dedication of all the people who continue to show up and support me and believe in my dream until I can make it a reality.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I learned in school that on the biggest part of filming is problem solving. You can plan for years, but things are still bound to go wrong. My newest feature that is almost in Post -Production took me a total of 3 years to complete. Simply because I had actors, that did not show up or crew that moved away. It made it impossible to keep a schedule for over 40 people. If one person couldn’t make it one day, I would have to try to find out what day everyone esle can make it, and sometimes other people couldn’t make those days, so i had to cancel the entire shoot and schedule it out a lot further than I wanted to. It got to the point where I had to pivot and change some element of my film, and take some people out, just so I can finish the film, which I really did not want to do. However, it happens in almost every movie, so lesson is, you just have to do what you have to, to get where you want to get.
How did you build your audience on social media?
To build your audience you need to know your audience . Know what makes them cheer, I find that comedy is almost a universal way to find your audience. Post funny clips from the internet or make funny post, then post your content, and your followers will adjust right with you. A little advice, take all your photos in your phone and place them into 3 separate albums. Categorize them which whatever your audience responses to. Mine was comedy, lifestyle and then music. Once you do that post one photo or clip from each album everyday around the same times that your audience is active. If you don’t know, you can always check your insights to see when they are most active. We use to use hashtags, but I thing they are not as powerful as they once were. Doing that will help your audience see different things out your timeline throughout the day instead of the same thing and will draw more people to your social media.
