We recently connected with De’Janay Bryant and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, De’Janay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
Two problems that I faced as a business owner were organization and separation. As someone who is new to owning a business it’s more strenuous when you’re the sole person that hand makes every item that you offer. Organization sometimes gets hectic or just tossed aside all together when there’s a huge order or a big upcoming event. Most times I literally feel as if I’m a chicken running around with my head cutoff. My way of solving the organization is to write things down and give myself reminders of items that need to be restocked or put back in there designated place. I also have found that a planner helps and making a to do list for that day keeps me on track to finish the important things. My second issue was separation. What I mean by separation is that I did not know how to actually take a day off from my business without feeling guilty for not doing anything. I have a schedule for when items go out and when items are packaged but I always feel as though I can still do something even on the days that I am supposed to be resting. This one is still hard and I’m learning to take my test days so that I’m not burnt out and to enjoy the time that I’m resting.

De’Janay, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I stumbled upon candle making when I discovered that the candles I purchased were not meeting my needs. It seemed as though the candles were not equating to the given burn time that was listed on the labels. I sought to change that in a more efficient way. I’m most proud of tackling this issue and actually having candles and products that last a long time and are beneficial to my customers needs. A small candle can fill the whole room and hallways of a home. They are soothing with the crackling wooden wicks and the wax is safe to burn. Candle Chemist Co. continuously evolves and adds more products for vast reasons. If you are someone that loves self care, this is your one stop shop. Candles, sugar scrubs, body butters, room sprays, beard shampoo, etc. can all be found here.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source to gaining new customers for a candle business would be pop up shops. Maintaining a e-commerce business is tricky when you sell products that are scented and skin related it is better to put the products in front of the customer. By doing the pop up shops it gives the customers a chance to smell and try out the sample products. This also gives the customer a face to go with the name of the business building a connection and getting to explain the background of the business. People love to know about the how and why of the business as well as the products.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I’d like to say that my products alone have built the reputation for my market. It’s ok to explain how your candles, body butters, sugar scrubs, etc. work but it is better for them to experience the products. Once someone buys an item they will tell me how wonderful it is and how the products worked for them. My personality and relatability also play a part in building my reputation. I will always give my customers the best experience that they could ever want. Awesome products and great customer service can take you very far.
