We were lucky to catch up with Dèjah B recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dèjah , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I have always been the ‘black sheep’ of any group because I ask the questions people fear. I question reality. I question people’s beliefs. I seek balance. I seek the truth, despite how painful it can be. I challenge people to think for themselves and to move through life with authenticity and with courage. I’ve been faced with a lot of adversity for this. People would label me as opinionated, rude, etc. I adopted these external projections as my own, which led to a lot of self-loathing. 76
However, things began to take a different route once I asked myself, “What do you believe?” “Are you the things these people claim you to be?” “Who are you?” “How much longer will you let others control your view of life & self?”
These questions shattered every piece of myself I thought to be true. I felt so exposed and without, but oddly enough, it gave me a clean slate. It was like pressing “New Game” on a loading screen. It was now my turn to write my own narrative and figure out what life meant to me. And let me just tell you, stepping into your divine truth will trigger a lot of people, even those you believed to be your “ride-or-die.” It’s a lonely road in the beginning, and that honestly used to scare me. I used to be so afraid of being alone. But in those moments of self-discovery, I found solace in divination, astrology, and spirituality. This newfound knowledge felt like a warm hug from a childhood friend. A friend that held my hand through those dark tunnels until I was able to walk on my own. I had to find freedom in expressing myself unapologetically. I had to find the peace in my solitude.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi, my name is Déjah and I am a healer. I first discovered this in middle school when I became the go-to friend for relationship advice. From growing up and never being properly heard, I made it my duty to show up for people the way I’ve always wanted. So, I got really good at actively listening to my friends talk about their relationships. I offered my advice and I helped mediate discussions between my clients/friends. I was always told how I would make a great therapist, so I went to school for counseling and graduated with my B.S. of Psychology. Throughout college is when I really discovered my spiritual nature, which led me towards divination practices and how to cultivate the universal energies. I studied astrology, birth charts, sound healing, and reading tarot cards as much as I could. It became a part of me and now I’m working to turn it into a beautiful community and career.
My mission is to help people discover their voice again. I am here to offer a safe space for people to understand that it is okay for them to step into their truth. It is okay for them to speak up. It is okay for them to choose a different path that is aligned with their heart and soul. I offer tarot readings and life coaching. My job is to help you connect with your truth, clear up any confusion, and help you find your footing again. The tarot cards are just confirming what you already intuitively know. I utilize my psychology background to uncover the root of the issue at hand and share solutions. In the future, I will pursue teaching yoga and create a physical space for those who need a place of solace and grounding.
I’m most proud of myself for not calling it quits, especially when those around me and life circumstances were pushing me to throw in the towel. I’m proud that I found the courage to keep walking through the flames. I always knew that I experienced the things in my life for a reason, which was to show people they’re not alone. I do this for people that were overlooked, for those that never had the chance or bravery to set boundaries, for those that struggled with honoring their potential, and for those that accepted others insecurities as their own. My intention with this interview is to bring in my soul tribe, to build that community, and to encourage as many people as I can.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The truth in how I built my audience on social media is due to two things: forget the algorithm/numbers + make a TikTok account. When I first started taking content creation serious, I focused heavily on working with the algorithm and following trends. I tried so hard to take the influencers’ advice of “How to grow your account in 30 days” or “Here’s why your views are low,” but it caused me more stress than I’d like to admit. However, my friends advised me to share my content on TikTok due to its growing audience. I listened and opened my account. I share my tarot readings on there and I have watched my account grow so much and so quickly within a couple of months. I remember posting my first tarot reading and watching all of the views and comments come rushing in, I cried happy tears and told my friends immediately. The same advice applies to Youtube. I post weekly lifestyle vlogs, and once I stopped worrying about matching a certain aesthetic and just created the content I wanted to see, everything became more entertaining. Post the content you want to see. Speak your mind. Create your own aesthetic. Be yourself. The universe will bring the right people to you.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The sigh of relief knowing that you’re not alone. That is the most rewarding aspect of what I do. I get to share my story with people from all over. I get to read comments about how my story has helped them see their situation differently, or how a tarot reading I’ve posted resonated with them. I love the connection with others. I love hearing about their stories. I love that there’s people I’ve never met before who relate to me. I love the freedom it provides. I love that being a creative grants you opportunities like this one here. It allows me to share my craft with the world and that makes my heart flutter.
