We recently connected with Deja Thomas and have shared our conversation below.
Deja, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Journey of Redefinition
Success isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept; it’s deeply personal and can take many forms. Growing up, I believed that success was all about hard work and grinding through life, sacrificing the things you love to earn the money needed to enjoy them eventually. This mindset led me to college, where I pursued a degree, thinking it was the only way to “make it” in the world. I even worked at Northwestern Mutual and was convinced it was my path to financial success. But in reality, I was following someone else’s definition of success, too scared to create my own.
Everything changed when I reached a breaking point. I dropped out of college, and found myself without a job, without money, and any clear direction. In this moment of uncertainty, I turned to prayer, asking God not for success, but for guidance—guidance that would bring me closer to Him and help me discover my true path.
A visit to my uncle in Florida was the turning point. Despite advice from almost everyone I knew, I took a job at Buc-ee’s and drove 18 hours to Florida, hoping that this bold move would help me grow. I arrived with less than I had back home, but I was determined to make it work. I was fortunate enough to find a kind woman who let me stay on her farm for just $200 a month. With only clothes and shoes, I embraced a simpler life.
In this new environment, I decided to let go of the old version of myself—the one who listened to everyone else and adopted their definitions of success. My uncle became my mentor, teaching me to think for myself and to create my own vision of success. It wasn’t until the passing of my brother that everything truly sank in. The loss made me realize that success isn’t about wealth or status; it’s about living a life true to yourself, grounded in faith, and aligned with your values.
We live in a world driven by materialism, but true success lies within the mind. It’s found in our faith in God and the simple appreciation of waking up each morning. When my brother passed, I realized that I was already successful because I was alive. I chose to pursue my passion for cleaning and finally start my own business—something I had been contemplating for months before his passing.
Starting my own business was both scary and nerve-wracking, but deep down, I knew I was already successful. I trusted that God and my brother above wouldn’t lead me down a path that wasn’t meant for me. Now, two years later, I couldn’t be more grateful for the push that God gave me to make it happen. Today, I feel financially, spiritually, and physically successful because of the peaceful mindset I’ve cultivated, one that is deeply rooted in prayer and gratitude.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello, I’m Deja Thomas, the proud owner of Spot On Solutions LLC. My journey into the cleaning industry began not from a business background, but from a deep personal shift that redefined what success meant to me. After experiencing significant personal loss and a period of uncertainty, I decided to take control of my life and pursue something that aligned with my values of leadership, balance, integrity, and service.
Spot On Solutions specializes in both commercial and residential cleaning, providing services that range from deep cleaning and decluttering to routine maintenance. We cater to a variety of clients, including daycares, offices, assisted living homes, car dealerships, and restaurants. What sets us apart is not just the quality of our work, but the personal touch we bring to each job. We believe that a clean environment is foundational to well-being and productivity, and we take pride in being the team that clients can rely on to manage that aspect of their lives and businesses.
I’m most proud of the relationships we build with our clients. We don’t just clean spaces; we help create environments where people can thrive. Whether it’s ensuring a safe and sanitary space for children in a daycare or making an office shine for a productive workday, we’re committed to excellence in every detail.
The main thing I want potential clients to know is that Spot On Solutions is more than a cleaning service—we’re a partner in creating spaces that reflect the values and needs of the people who use them. Our work is driven by a passion for helping others and a deep commitment to our craft. Spot On Solutions aims to exceed expectations and build lasting relationships with our clients. We’re not just in the business of cleaning—we’re in the business of making life easier, one spotless space at a time.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Building my reputation was remarkably effortless because connecting with people is second nature to me. My bubbly personality and genuine interest in others have been instrumental in forming and nurturing relationships with my clients. This innate ability to connect has paved the way for word-of-mouth referrals, leading me to a thriving network of like-minded and amazing clients. It’s this personal touch that has been crucial in growing Spot On Solutions and fostering a loyal and supportive clientele.
How’d you meet your business partner?
When I first started Spot On Solutions, I knew nothing about business. Then, a guardian angel in the form of Amber Bobin appeared. Amber didn’t just point me in the right direction; she introduced me to two incredible women, Jasmin Sharp and Caroline Pavel, who helped bring my vision for Spot On Solutions to life. These three women took me under their wings, giving me the confidence to persevere against all odds.
Amber became my rock. Our daily conversations not only helped me navigate the grief of losing my brother but also guided me through the next steps in building my business. She taught me how to connect with clients, price out cleans, manage money, and transition from being just an employee of my business to truly owning it.
Jasmin and Caroline took my business from a mere dream to a tangible reality with their design expertise. Despite having little money and no clear vision for my brand, they listened to me and crafted the surreal brand I have today. Jasmin created a flawless, engaging website, and I couldn’t be more grateful for their involvement in my life. Without their guidance and love, I wouldn’t be where I am today, and I am forever thankful.
