We were lucky to catch up with Deja Childers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Deja thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
There’s something truly magical about how ingredients come together in the oven, transforming into something delicious and comforting. Each recipe holds a story, a memory, a connection to the past. Baking is not just about creating something sweet or savory; it’s about creating moments that bring people together, sharing joy, laughter, and love. I learned my craft through those experiences. Every bite has a taste of tradition, a sprinkle of nostalgia, and a dash of creativity. Baking is more than just a hobby for me; it’s a way of life, a source of joy, and a reminder that even in the busiest of times, there’s always time to bake a little happiness.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am often referred to as everyone’s favorite “whisk”taker, but in reality, I am just a regular Southern girl who has a passion for baking and creating edible art. Being a military spouse, I have moved around quite often, which has allowed me to connect with different cultures through food. I started baking in 2019 to help me deal with post-partum depression after giving birth to my son AJ, who is now our head taste tester. With the support of my wonderful family, I was able to pursue my dream of starting Childers Cakery. My family inspires me every day to challenge myself and to never stop trying to perfect my craft. At Childers Cakery, we offer a variety of products and services, including custom cakes, cupcakes, and other baked goods. I enjoy bringing others’ visions to life with my delicious creations. I also take pride in being a trendsetter in the baking industry. In the future, I plan to expand my social media cake content and continue to inspire others to be a “whisk”taker!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a baker, the most fulfilling aspect of my job is being a part of someone’s special day. It warms my heart to know that they have specifically chosen me to be a part of it. It is heartening to hear that I have served as an inspiration to other bakers, especially children who appreciate seeing someone like them pursuing baking. The best compliment I ever received was from a 12-year-old girl who wanted to be a baker like the lady with the curly afro. Representation plays a crucial role in inspiring others.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn self-doubt. When I used to fail, I would take it to heart and feel discouraged, but I learned to push forward instead. A good thing about baking is that even if you make mistakes, the results are still quite tasty.
