We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Deion Kieley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Deion below.
Deion, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
This is a difficult question because I truly believe that our experiences shape our creative flow in a way.
When I was just out of high school I truly had the belief that I was impossible to be a “successful” musician but in reality my point of view was very naive at that point in my life. Starting sooner meaning going all in at that point would not have worked because in that time who I was then and who I am now are drastically different due to my life experiences.
In honesty I could have prepared my Artist career a little better by being proactive with practice and discipline. That will always be the case for me personally. I think if I had stated later I’d lose a lot of opportunities for Airship as whole, so honestly the way it happened was the perfect storm.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The industry was introduced to me a long time ago back in 2004. Truth be told I was only 8 at the time, so my perspective of the world was very small. My uncle introduced me to the passion of music and how it can help soothe the soul in times of rough waters. As a kid I didn’t really understand what that meant, but I did understand how having a passion or life goal was a riveting way to live life.
I wanted to learn how to write music from the moment I understood how to convey feelings through music. This happens around when I was 16 and found that through plying I could help myself and others. Writing has always been a passion of mine and melding music and English into one was truly a life changing event.
The product our band specifically tries to sell us love and happiness. Our music is a space where all of us can rest and through every emotion we can heal together. As a band I think we all have this connection to each other. We found out what we needed in life and to give back to the community around us is truly amazing. As a band we are always looking out for ways to help others and in this world I think that’s something special.
I’m truly proud of the hard work everyone puts into this passion project everyday. The message of love and understanding is fully present each time we go public or are practicing away at home.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It has to be the people I meet. The artists We connect with daily and the people we meet at shows are the what helps us stay up late and make more music. Honestly it feels silly but sometimes just connecting with someone else regardless of topic is the coolest perks of being a creative.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
The main lesson I think is patience. The big picture is so hard to see sometimes and the small details of the day to day can be overwhelming. The journey is long and detailed, so in a way you have to practice patience and repetition until you get the desired results. Trial and error is the path.
