We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Deijah Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Deijah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
The first dollar I ever earned as a creative was when I did background work for a lifetime movie. This was just a year after graduating college when I lived in Atlanta , Georgia. The thrill of being on set with one of my favorite childhood actors, while getting paid for it was such a great experience especially so early on in the pursuit of my career in entertainment.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve wanted to be an actress since I was about 3 or 4 years old. Acting is my passion however I’ve picked up several more passions along the way. Vlogging, styling and modeling to name a few. I just recently walked in two shows for New York fashion week and I’ve walked in LA fashion week earlier this year. I’m not your average sized model and that’s why I love doing it. I want to inspire and motivate all the mid-size girls that there is a place for you in this industry. I also have a business called crowned styling where you can book services that not only transform your personal style but each service also comes with a coaching session that assists you in uprooting any limiting beliefs and internal struggles you may have that ultimately affect your overall presence/aura. I want to make sure every client looks good from the inside out. You can also find me on YouTube and Instagram @allaboutdeijah , you can get more insight into my everyday life by watching my lifestyle and faith based vlogs.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best way to support creatives is by taking them seriously. Society usually views creators as dreamers and not business people. We are our own brand/business and we would like to be treated as such. A little respect goes a long way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of it all is knowing I’m making my inner child smile because she was right all along. She knew exactly what she wanted out of life so I’m giving it to her .
