We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Deepa Subramanian . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Deepa below.
Deepa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
Technology has greatly impacted the art industry in the last few years. The new wave of Generative art, AI and dynamic NFT’s have altered the way people perceive art today. Although the NFT’s created a big buzz at the start , it couldn’t sustain the ebb and flow of the art market. But looks like digital art and its fascinating growth is here to stay. This brand new segment in the art world skyrocketed in 2021 and the democratization of technology has made it easier and accessible to emerging artists. I have to also add that although digital art has come to prominence recently, many may not know that it has been around for a long time. Today’s trend in the digital art can be traced to its historical immediate past where the seeds have sowed by another generation of artists. In this context we are trying to bring the pioneers of the digital art to the forefront alongside the new generation of artists who are largely from tech industries.
Currently, I am working with some notable people from the digital art world and planning to have an exhibit in LA before the end of this year.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Deepa Subramanian is an art curator based in Los Angeles. She launches contemporary artists into the mainstream art world. Her expertise is in producing meticulously curated events as well as establishing media relations and strategic partnerships, creating an extensive network of connections in the art, academic and cultural communities. Her venture in LA “Galerie De’Arts Consultancy” is focussed on ‘curating brands’ as opposed to “curating art”.
I was born into a family of entrepreneurs which possibly led me to start two diametrically opposite businesses… Art and Pharmaceuticals. Back in 2001 when I co-founded a supply chain management company in Pharmaceutical chemicals in Bangalore, India, little did I know that “art” was to come into my life in a much bigger way. In 2009, I founded “Galerie De’arts”, a contemporary art gallery in the heart of the bustling city of Bangalore. What started as a one off show grew into one of the top galleries in the city in a short period of time. By 2017, when I relocated to the United States, I had curated over 50 significant art shows with some of the most iconic artists of the times.
In the last five years, I have been showing US based artists in Los Angeles, CA. My last show was at the LA Art Fair, 2023 where I showed the works of LA Marler, a contemporary pop artist. In Dec 2022, I launched Berta Negari, an LA based abstract artist. I don’t have a brick & mortar space in LA but I collaborate with like minded people and spaces. Although I do miss my own gallery space a lot, I somehow like this new found freedom which has opened up a lot of opportunities.
Galerie De’Arts Consultancy based in Los Angeles, is focussed on curating “brands” as opposed to “curating art”. What we aim to do here is to create a brand value and build them individually as enduring brands and help them reach niche and passionate audiences. Our client base includes not just artists but also art collectors, public spaces, art galleries and innovations in the digital space. We strive to ensure that the brand consistently lives up to its expectations, So if you are anyone connected to visual arts, and looking to grow exponentially in size and stature, we step in and help.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My father was a successful business man in the Ad industry and he once told me ” Make your client your best friend, the business will follow”!! I find that to be a very effective way to retain long standing clients and serves as a great resource for finding potential clients.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes, I certainly can!! It was probably one of the biggest pivots by any standards when I moved the US five years ago. The shift of base from the east to the west brought a whole lot of changes in my life in my business, career, identity, family, etc. It need a kind of resilience to be able to make this move. The dynamics of business are very different in the US as opposed to India. But I have been able to turn this challenge into an opportunity to blend the east with the west and create platforms for cultural exchanges.I have exhibited the works of several Indian artists in the US and likewise I would like to take back local artists to India.
