We were lucky to catch up with Deep End Music Group recently and have shared our conversation below.
Deep End, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The B2BY (Born 2 Be You) EP which comes out May 12th has been by far my most meaningful project. Born 2 be you encompasses everything I want to promote. I was adopted at 2 months old by my amazing and loving parents. My Mom is European American and my Dad is African American. Growing up I saw many different sides of life and understood how color impacted certain people and communities as well as individuals like myself. If you’re familiar with Earl Sweatshirt he has a line that says, “Too black for the white kids, and too white for the blacks.”
Being an artist I’m expected to fit in a certain box based on people’s perception of me. For a long time I’d adhere to the lines and wouldn’t cross them in fear of not being accepted but I’m saying f*ck all that.
I make music because it’s therapeutic for me so if you ain’t f*ckin’ with it then that’s cool. For those that want to experience me as a person I’d love to have them listen and appreciate who I am. We have to stop stripping people of their individuality and understand that the real “weird” people are the ones who conform their entire life.
At the end of the day you were Born 2 Be You. From this point on my music is going to exemplify exactly that.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The cornerstone to my music goes back to being adopted at 2 months old. I’ve viewed love and relationships differently since a young age understanding that family isn’t blood especially since I didn’t grow up around my biological relatives. When I met CEO Self he immediately took on that big brother role and took me under his wing with music.
Self taught me how to write music and make hit records. I’m fortunate enough to have him and his wife Juice in my life and they’ve played a vital role in my development as a person. They’ve stressed the importance consistency and resilience when it comes to being an artist. They’ve stressed the importance of a team and how behind the act you see on stage there’s a machine making it all work. Self and Juice will forever be a part of my team in music. I’d be remised if I didn’t mention Marcus On The Beat. This has been my right hand in music. He’s helped me develop a sound and has been behind some of my largest records. He’s put in the time, effort, and energy. If there’s anything I could tell upcoming artist it’d be to make sure you lock in with someone to develop a sound. Especially if there’s a producer that’s willing to walk this journey with you.
I don’t want to get in here and start listing out what sets me a part. Everyone is special and comparison is the thief of joy. If you want something that displays individuality and authenticity then tap in with me.
I’m proud of myself first and foremost for prioritizing self love. For a long time I put that on the back burner and it led to spiraling, negative energy, and daily toxicity for extended periods. We all go through seasons and life and I’m proud to say I’ve made it through these storms. I appreciate my family for supporting me along the way! As far as music we’re pushing and will forever push the message of B2BY – Born 2 Be You. You were born to be you, not your homeboy, not the person you see on IG or TikTok, you were born to be you! Remember that.
That’s the brand. That’s the message. That’s the truth. That’s the mission.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect has been empowering others to share their story and express themselves. Posting about my adoption story and talking about that in my music has opened up a communication channel I didn’t know was there inside the adoption community. People have been reaching out left and right sharing their adoption story and the cool thing about it is everyone’s story is unique. Knowing that this community has been put on the back burner has opened my eyes to a need for support. I’m happy to share my story and look forward to empowering others to share theirs.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society can learn to appreciate people more. Appreciate everyone for who they are and understand that we’re all special. Stop thinking that we have to criticize everybody and everything and just let certain things be. Even the dead flower in a fully bloomed garden has a story.
