We were lucky to catch up with Deena Pelton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Deena, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I always had an interest in art. So I always have been interested in the paint and sip industry. After I had my daughter I started painting again and after a week I realized this was the happiest I felt in a long time and wanted to share this feeling with others. I started researching more about paint and sip industry and I found a few places teaching people how to earn income teaching paint parties and I was hooked. I jumped right in.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I teach people how to paint at parties. This is a fun activity to do together and an experience. I teach adults as well as children. I go to people’s homes and set up a painting studio right in their home. I give the instruction for the guest to follow. Most people comment that they haven’t painted since they were kids. After painting I clean up and take a group photo showing off their creations. Most people are pleasantly surprised and found a new hobby.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I use to think everything had to be perfect before I took the first step in my business. I always thought I had to be better before I could move a head. This I learned is called imposter syndrome. Once I realized there was a name for this and other people feel the same thing I knew there was no more excuses and it was time to move forward.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When I started my business I imagined selling tickets to events held in restaurants for adults. This model was not working for me. That’s when I started gettIng calls to come to private parties and to also do children’s parties as well. This is when I pivoted and changed my target audience and started focusing on private parties..
