We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dee Will . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dee below.
Hi Dee , thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Abso-freakin-lutely wish I started this 11+ years ago. Most people don’t know that I use to make skits on Facebook before it became a thing..before the surge of social media..before the IG, vine and TikTok. I wish I had the confidence that I have now in my early 20s. Back then there was only about 3 folk that looked like me (well at least back then 🤣🤣🤣) which were kid fury, tre Melvin and Kingsley. I use to always think, where would my life be now if i really focused on my craft at a earlier age.
Dee , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was introduced to “The Read” podcast which stars Kid Fury & Crissle in college and after being inspired by their show I dreamt about having own, but did not know where and how to start. That was until an old friend of mine invited me on to his show..and almost immediately i knew that i NEEDED to have my own. At the time i was only aware of podcasts that had multiple hosts so i quickly started to create and build a show of my own. I had the outline of my very first show “The Good & The Gag” all the way back in 2018. It wasn’t until 2019 I found a suitable cohost and the rest is history.
I immediately fell in love with the art of podcasting, and yes, to me, what I do is art. After a mildly successful season of The Good & The Gag, sadly it ended.
That’s when “Goops, Gags & Tea w/Dee” was born. My very own show, all….by…myself.
I am so proud of it…so loud..colorful, queer, theatrical and unapologetically me. I had so much fun combining all the things that I love, storytelling, pop culture and helping people. I was so shocked at the feedback and success of the first season that I KNEW I had to come back stronger than ever. Season 1 ended fall 2020 and the plan was to start Season 2 in spring. Long story short, it didn’t happen. I moved to Atlanta summer 2020 in hopes of following my dreams but shortly after my mother passed and it totally hindered my creativity. Until I woke up one day and used that darkness to fuel my creativity…thats what brings us to season 2.
Season 2, a rebrand that I did not expect at all. I woke up a few days ago and dreamt a sign in lights that read “The Legend Destinee Experience” and in that moment, I knew that’ was the new name of the show.
So hello, let me reintroduce myself, my name is Legend Destinee and welcome to the new show, “The Legend Destinee Experience”
Come join me as i seamlessly navigate between three different segments per week which includes fan favorite pop culture commentary (All Tea.. All Shade), offering advice to listeners (Write Me B!TCH) and uplifting the LGBTQ+ community with discussions surrounding mental health, news and current events (Alphabet Club).
Simultaneously, sprinkled throughout the main show, come along the journey on Book 2 of the Legend of The Butch Queen Killer.
I am combining four different elements in ONE show. Pop culture commentary, Grade A audiobook style storytelling and my love for all things queer.
This is what sets me apart. This is what I’m most proud of.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I know this might sound cliche, but inspiring and touching the lives of people. When people reach out to me for advice during Write Me B!TCH, I’m still in shock that people pour their heart out to me. When people tell me that my story inspires them…it literally always puts a smile on my face. I feel like if I’ve changed one persons ideas or views I’ve done my job.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes of course lol even though I love doing this I’m not doing it just to do it. Yes I love creating and sharing my art but I would love to do this on a grander scale. I’ve been writing a full length novel based off of Season 1 “The World of Goops & Gags” which is this fairytale inspired fantasy epic..and I would LOVE for that to be translated to a visual medium. I would also LOVE to do work on Netflix’s Big Mouth or Human Resources. I would love to step into voice acting (especially for inappropriate adult cartoons lol).
