Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dee Harris. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Dee, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

I actually came up with the idea quite organically. I have always had a love for interior design and and beautifying spaces in general. For years, I would often get compliments whenever friends or family would visit my personal homes. I would be encouraged to do it professionally, but back then, I never saw interior design as a career choice. It was always something that I enjoyed and it just came quite naturally to me. Now, let’s fast forward…lol. As I began to take on design projects outside of the initial friends and family, requests for me design services began to grow. I would no sooner finish one job when I would receive another inquiry for my services. As hard as I tried to ignore the “pull” at my career shift, the greater the vision for my destiny began to take shape. As the old saying goes: “If it is your calling, it will keep calling you”! Luckily for me, I finally answered the call and I now get to pursue my passion and it is truly a beautiful thing!

Dee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Dee Harris Interiors is an interior design company based in Memphis, TN. I am a self taught interior decorator. We specialize in bold colors and pattern mixes to accentuate beautiful modern design and decor. My design portfolio is indicative of the captivating, eye catching aesthetic that you can expect when you have Dee Harris Interiors on board for your residential or commercial design project. I consider each individual space and how the client intends to use the designated area. I gather information during the initial consultation that helps me to access how to best assist the client to achieve their design goals and to deliver a space that they are proud of, eager to spend time in and to enjoy (as well as show off) to family and friends. I am always proud to WOW my clients at the end of the process and to provide to them a space that is not only visually pleasing, but functional and one that they are happy to have made an investment in to make it so much more than they ever imagined it could be.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.

As I touched on in a previous segment, Dee Harris Interiors was birthed through a gradual process. Over the years, the requests for home décor projects increased and the referrals from previous home design work became more and more frequent. Life pressures, stress, and a health scare gave me no choice but to sit down and re-evaluate my life’s path. The answer to my life’s journey could not be more clear. The inevitable birth of my interior décor dreams began to come more clearly into focus.

I finally could no longer leave my dream on the back burner, and Dee Harris Interiors was born. My creative outlook has only continued to expand, along with my clientele. I would encourage anyone who feels that “tug” at their heartstrings regarding their life’s purpose to always follow their gut, hone their skills, and don’t silence that little voice in their head telling them to go for it. Please know that no aspiration or goal is too big for you to accomplish. Of couple of my key milestones were staging a half a million dollar home of an NBA player, which sold in only 5 days. Another milestone that I am super proud of is the renovation of a commercial building for the Memphis Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. It was a stellar transformation that both the clients and I were tremendously proud of.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

Most of my business is based off of referrals. Many of my past clients tell their family and friends about their experiences with Dee Harris Interiors, which often result in new interior design contracts for me. It really makes me proud that people think so highly of the work and services that our company provides. Of course I don’t take it for granted. That just makes me work even harder to earn the respect and trust of potential clients. I want them to know that I will go above and beyond to ensure that they have a positive experience and that they walk away from the process feeling that I accomplished the goals set forth by the client. As a result, they feel confident enough to recommend Dee Harris Interiors to the people that they love most.
