We were lucky to catch up with Dee Goodson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dee, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
That would have to be back when I sing to a girl in front of my entire school when I was 14! I know it sounds mad cheesy but she had just broke up with me and I wanted her win her back because I swore I was in love with her and I felt like I had to show her in the most extravagant way (laughs)! What was even crazier what it was during the Black History Month program at our school and I been practicing the song that I was gonna do for the show but I changed all the lyrics and everything the DAY of the event! So when I got on stage the entire was watching me and I didn’t go to a small high school… we’re talking 500+ people! I said this song is for my Hawaiian Baby and every knew who I was talking about because we been together for a little while. But after I got done all I heard was a roar of screaming and I seen her standing up clapping and crying and I knew right there that I had a gift with music and influencing emotions with the guitar and my voice.
Dee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well…. I am a recording artist, musician, and songwriter from Dothan, Alabama. I learned how to play piano at 6 years old, guitar at 9, and singing at 14. I had my first spark to pursue music when I seen Drake, from the old TV show Drake and Josh, play his guitar and perform in front of people and I thought about how cool it was and wondered how I’d look doing that but didn’t really. A few years go by and I see the Jonas Brothers perform all over TV! This was back when they released Year 3000! When I see Nick Jonas jamming out and singing really cool catchy music I knew that was exactly what Iwanted to do and began trying to learn how to sing and write music. Once I gained the confidence to perform I started to enter little contests in my hometown and actually WON them! I figured “okay hey.. I might be on to something here.” But at that time I was only doing covers and still finding the confidence in my voice. Once I turned about 19 I moved to Fort Myers, FL and that’s where I really started to find my sound and really gain a lot of attention in the industry. On September 7, 2018, I signed to the Hip Hop legend Trina and her record label Rockstarr Music Group. Once I signed to her I dropped my debut single “Mi Way”, which if you know me and my music you’d know how crazy that single went in Florida. I really grasped a lot of people’s attention with the single “Mi Way” which is currently in the six-digit count of streams. After I got out of that deal with Trina I really wanted to just focus on myself again and really develope as an artist and that’s exactly what I did. My last recent songs that I’ve released are Man Enough and Time To Go and they showcase very well my growth as not only a musician but a songwriter and artist. I’d say what I’m most proud of is being able to walk onto a stage where literally no one has ever seen me before but they still connect with my music and end up becoming huge fans once my set is done. I think that’s a true gift and not just anyone can do that.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me I’d say it’s the connections and relationships with not only then big prolly but the fans and supporters. It’s always cool to meet celebrities in person for me it’s even more surreal is meeting the people that listen to your music to feel seen and heard. Imagine making something completely from scratch and people actually thanking you for making it because they feel they need to hear it… That’s what it’s all about for me.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Support upcoming artists. The celebrities already made it, they’re rich already. Be eager to look for the guys that are trying to get heard like me because we just might surprise you with what we have. People see someone passing out QR code cards with their music links on it and avoid them for some reason. Humor them and just check them out! What’s 3-5 minutes gonna hurt?!
