We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dee Fomby a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dee, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Growing up I always wanted to pursue a career in the music industry. I had no idea what it would be, but I knew it would be something in the music industry. I always found a lot of interest in music production, but I did not know for sure that it would be that.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Dee Fomby and I live in Atlanta, Georgia. I’m originally from Alabama, and I go by the producer name Dee Fom. I got into the music industry by teaching myself how to produce music from FL Studio. Once I learned music production, I reached out to some of my favorite artists. The first major artist that I connected with and produced a song for was Boosie. The connection actually happened faster than I thought it would. From there I just stayed motivated and perfecting my craft. Also, I would like to think him for that because it helped motivate me. He is a real one for that. Lastly, what I would want others to know about my music is that I really put the time into perfecting my beats. I want to be considered one of the greatest to ever do it someday.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My journey to become a music producer wasn’t an easy road. I started teaching myself music production, but I wasn’t satisfied with the production at the time. It was draining me putting the hours in and not getting the results I wanted, so I just gave up on music production for a while. Then one day I just woke up and told myself I got this, and to keep learning and perfecting my craft.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish that I would have known other producers at the time, so that I could have learned music production sooner. I was new to Atlanta and transitioning out of the Army, so I really didn’t know anybody here.
